Explain why employees often resist change when it is introduced in a workplace and recommend
ways in which managers can reduce the extent of such resistance and its effectiveness.
Resistance to change is concerned with opposition of change that are likely to be
introduced in organisation. In other words, employees do not accept change and oppose on
proposal of change introduction in organisation (Damawan and Azizah, 2020). Resistance of
change by employees is also a significant problem that managers in organisation experience
when they are required to There are several reasons because of which employees often resists
when change is introduced in organisation and these reasons are-
Loss of Job- This is one of the important reason because of which employees resist change in
organisation. This means that when change is introduced, employees fear that they might lose
their job and this is very common in change introduction pertaining technology. In addition to
this situation when change are complex, employees fear that they might lose job because of
being less or incompetent for the work in changed circumstances.
Shock and fear of something that is not known- This is also a reason because of which
employees resist and in this when employees consider that what they were doing in past did well
for them, they are likely to fear for something that is unknown and unpredictable. They are not
aware how change will affect them and their working leads to fear.
Lack of support- This is also a reason when employees do not have adequate support while
change is being planned and introduced they are likely to resist change (Shimoni, 2017). This is
also a situation when structural change in organisation takes place and employees perceive that
people they are operating with and those who are support system for them will change because of
structural change. This leads them to resist change when it is being introduced in organisation.
Former experience of change- This is also a reason because of which employees might resist
change and this happens when change in past has bad experience for employees. Past experience
