London Aquatics Centre by Zaha Hadid“Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought togetherin light”. – Le Corbusier, Towards a New Architecture, Paris 1923.This, perhaps was the inspiring thought of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadidwhen she designed the London Aquatics Centre in 2004, long before the bid for 2012Summer Olympics was won by London. This is also evident from the architecturalconcept of the Centre which is inspired by the fluid geometries of water in motion1.Completed on 27th July 2011 at a construction cost of £269 million, the centre hadcapacity of 17,500, which was later reduced to 2,500 post-Olympics.The London Aquatics Centre has been planned on an orthogonal axis which isperpendicular to the Stratford City Bridge and the three main pools were also alignedwith this axis. The pool hall, which is above the podium, has been covered by a largeroof whose alienation is along the same axis as the pools. The training pool has beenprovided under the bridge whereas the competition and the diving pools are locatedwithin the large hall under the roof. The architect has used Double-curvature Geometryfor generating the parabolic arch structure2 and this gives a unique characteristic to theroof.Post-Olympics, the two “temporary wings" were removed and the capacity was reducedto a regular 2,500, although an additional 1,000 seats can be added for major events. This is the only venue built for 2012 Olympics, which has remained functionalthereafter, although in a downsized version.1 Douglas Spencer, The Architecture of Neoliberalism: How Contemporary Architecture Became an Instrument of Control and Compliance.
