LOW CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION1
Introduction- Culture:
The dimensions and the concepts of culture are a common subject matter for the
sociologists and the anthropologists. Culture is regarded as a phenomenon that continues
from one generation to the other through the processes of social learning. It can also be
transmitted from one society to the other through the modes of social learning, and social mix
(Kittler, Rygl, & Mackinnon, 2011). Therefore, the term culture is universal, since it is
present across all the societies. The concept of culture is essentially related to the art forms,
the languages of a particular community, to the technology presented in society and to the
architectural constructs of a specific society (Ting-Toomey, & Dorjee, 2018). There are
mostly two forms of culture, the high and the low culture. The high culture refers to the
perception that is much enriched and of high esteem, and are essentially related to the people
with the cultural aristocracy. On the other hand, the low culture refers to the popular culture,
or the culture of the mass (Weldes, 2015). The culture can be directed by and be upheld and
shown by any forms, art, music, and the like. Therefore, it is seen that the culture of a person
or a place is upheld by the communication structure involved in the system. The scholars
have suggested that the direct and indirect, and the verbal and non- verbal language of a place
or person is much influenced by the cultural background that the place or the person holds.
The pattern of communication is also influenced by the cultural context of a palace or a
person.
Therefore, in the following essay, I wish to reflect upon my personal experiences of
an incident of low culture, cultural changes and the influence of low culture on
communication. This I have gained through my professional skills, and I will also discuss
upon differentiation between the low and the high culture.

LOW CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION2
Real-Life Incident:
I have been a chef for five years now, and have noticed that the food habits of a
particular place, influence the food menus of restaurants of a specific cultural setup.
Moreover, the onset of Globalization has also contributed to the food menus and the food
habits of the people. The food habit of the low culture people is essentially characterized by
more of a natural touch into their food. This natural touch can be in the preparation process of
the food or the ingredients used in the food. These aspects are now being included in the food
menus of the famous and renowned restaurants, under some exotic names. However, I have
found one particular change in the food and beverage industry as an influence of low culture
upon communication. I have noticed two types of changes, first, is that there is a change in
the communication pattern with the customers, and also there is a change in the
communication pattern among the employees. I have noticed this change primarily through a
very incident that had taken place in front of me that came across with the shift in my
workplace. The place where I was previously working was small, and it had its customers
from usually, within the town. The place was more affordable and was dominated by the
middle class more. However, the place where I'm currently working at, is situated at the heart
of the city, and is a bit more expensive, and is dominated by a high-class people. Therefore,
the system of behaviour and the system of communication that is involved in these two places
vary greatly. However, to explain better the differences in the cultural and the communication
process of the workplace, I wish to explain the concept of high and low culture and the
relation between the two.
Low Culture:
The popular culture of a society or the world as a whole is referred to as the Low
Culture. Therefore, the low culture is regarded as a derogatory term that is attached to the
notions of the popular culture of a place. It is often seen that the term low culture is attributed
