Manage Environmental Management Practices and Processes in Building and Construction_1

Introduction
In simple terms, demolition can be defined as taking out of any load-supporting structural
element or wrecking of a building. Today the demolition industries have become very
sophisticated hence requires competence and expertise from the involved individuals. There has
been some misconception which is very popular that demolitions are simply knocking a structure
down before having all the debris hauled to a landfill (Akanni, Oke and Akpomiemie 2015). This
kind of assumption is actually wrong. In Australia, the process of the demolition is actually
enhanced due to the practice of erecting high rise structures in the places that were initially
occupied with the low-rise structures.
The selection of the techniques for the demolition is thus guided by the experience and
the relevant knowledge. This particular study seeks to provide a detailed report on the
management in regard to the environmental practices during the demolition of Yorkshire
brewery (14-21 Robert Street Collingwood) to create space for high rise construction while
retaining the heritage of the surrounding or adjacent buildings.

Reviewing and setting of the environmental objectives as well as targets to assist in
driving the continuous improvement of the environment.

Development of environmental awareness of the workers through effective training and
education.
Effective communication to ensure that other parties that work for the company including
sub-contractors adhere to the policies as well as procedures of the company.
Stakeholders involved in the demolition projects
During the demolition of the Yorkshire brewery (14-21 Robert Street Collingwood),the
following stakeholders were involved:
Safety officers: Demolition process is usually characterized by the falling debris among
other hazardous objects. The safety officer will ensure that relevant materials including
PPEs are made available.
Engineers: There is an evaluation of very many facts during, before and after the process
of the demolition. Prior to the exercise of the demolition, there is a need for the engineers
to properly understand the project demolition impact on the nearby structures.
Considering that the building which is taken through demolition was close to others, the
structural engineer in collaboration with the civil engineer will establish the degree or the
impact of the intended demolition.
