INTRODUCTIONManagement and operations are the two terms which can be considered as the backbonefor any organisation. Leaders and managers play a vital role in the management and variousoperations of business. This report has been framed on management and operations of ASDAStores Limited. It is a British supermarket retailer which is having headquarter in Leeds, WestYorkshire. It has become a subsidiary company of American retail company, Walmart. Inbetween the year 2003 to 2014, ASDA stores Ltd was the second largest supermarket chain inretail sector. Besides this, primary business in supermarket retail sector. This company alsooffers financial services and mobile phones by using EE network.(Arnold, K.A. and Loughlin,C., 2013) Management operations is the area which considers designing and maintenance ofbusiness strategies and operations. The basic objective of management and operations is tomaintain good human relation in business environment. It also considers developingmanagement skill among all employees so that they can manage various operations oforganisation.TASK 1a) Different roles and characteristics of leaders and managers Managers and leaders are those individuals who have the responsibility for every task in abusiness organisation. Their responsibilities start from acquiring raw material for the productionand end at selling and distribution of finished goods. Leaders and managers applies the actualmind behind all these activities. (Baldwin, J.S., Allen, P.M. and Ridgway, K., 2010) The hardwork of workforce who are employed to convert the raw material into finished goods can’t beignored but management and leaders frame such strategies and imply such methods andtechniques so that the workforce can get better results with less efforts. Leaders and managersboth need to make targets and strategies to achieve those predetermined targets. Leadership is apractical effort for the solution of direct efforts. (Barratt, M., Choi, T.Y. and Li, M., 2011)On the other hand, managers need to assist employees on different levels to manage theirtasks. As per usual concept, leadership is the inborn quality of a person. However, managerialqualities are those which a person learns through various situations which he faces. The verybasic difference between leadership and management is that leaders have their subordinates whofollow them. But on the other hand, managers have subordinates or employees who work for

them. Some people play the role of both; leaders and managers. This is the reason; it gets socomplex to make out any difference in them. If an owner of a business enterprise wants to makehis business a successful one, then he needs to be a good manager as well as a good leader.Managers generally have task to react in front of surprising situations. It is their responsibility toreact in a positive way to the situations which arise during the course of business operations. Onthe other hand leaders creates changes.
