INTRODUCTION Management and operation are the essential factors of organisation which aim is proper utilisation of resources and increase profitability. Marks and Spencer is a world wide known for providing clothing and home product. It is a public limited company ofLondon , united states, formed by two persons whose name is Michael marks and Thomas Spencer. The company aim is always providing qualitative product to the customers. The organisation at present 84939 employees approx from its starting year 1884. This report is conducted to find out role of manager and leader in different situations. It also put light on various models and theories which manager and leader use in order to deal with various circumstances. There are many factors in the environment which affect business decision and routine activities. Moreover, also discuss the importance of operation management in the organisation smooth working. Introduction to the organisation you have chosen and its management structure Marks and Spencer is a public limited company who is listed in London stock exchange and it deals in clothing and home product. Theyqualitative product to the customer at a high price as compared to its competitive firm. Marks and Spencer follow flat organisational structure. In this there is less control of authority on the employees. Due to this employees are more responsible of their work. 2 Manager and leader and compare their roles and characteristics Manager: A manager is someone who plans, organise , direct and control people and their activities so that business can achieve its targets (Bakalar, Baggini and et. al., 2017). Every department of organisation have different managers who guide the people of their part how to work for achieving their personal and professional goal. Role of manager in the arrangement are as follows : ď‚·Resource allocator :There are two main resources in every organisation is time and money. The duty of manager is to properly allocate the fund to the members and project.
Manger distribute time properly for the fulfilment of different task. M&S manager should provide the resources according to the requirement of various department of organisation. Characteristic which manager contain in this personality are described briefly below: Critical thinking :Manager before implementing any project firstly analyse it and understand how that task helps business to enhance their effectiveness. They should know how to convert this understanding in the objectives for the team member. Leader: A leader is a person who guides subordinates for the contribution towards organisation goal. They are present at both formal and informal group. An individual hold the post of the leader because of his qualities and behaviour. Leader guide the employees regarding the activities of the organisation so that they can support in achieving desired goal. Risk taking :Every business take risk in there working life span whether on small scale or large scale. Manager of M&S always avoid risk because they have lot of work in the organisation which get suffer through invention .While leader of M&S always ready to take risk becausetheyknowthatbytakingrisktheycanincreasetherevenueandsalesofthe organisation. Leader adopt new things or do innovation without thing about its failure and success. Conflict resolution :Disagreement and argument between two people or group is conflict. People always try to avoid conflict as it create negative environment but in organisation it is taken place to achieve desired target (Bahn,2013). Managers of M&S always avoid conflict in their organisation because they believe that business can achieve its desired target when all staff work together with mutual cooperation. Leader of M&S also make effort to resolve the dispute among the employees, by creating it as competition among the staff to increase their productivity. 5 Different management and leadership theories to support growth and sustainable performance. Organisation should adopt different leadership style on the basis of their situation. Mostly leaders adopt one or two leadership style in their working. But successful individual have variety of style in their kit which they uses according to the circumstance. There are three different leadership styles are determine below as- Situational leadership: It is a model or approach developed by the Paul Hershey and ken Blanchard.According to this style there is no single leadership style followed in the organisation. Organisation should fit their leadership style according to the characteristic and skill of their followers (Lind,2013). It
is not based on the skill of leader but they have to modify their style of leadership to cope with the requirements of the enterprise. ď‚·Future growth- M&S is successful because thereleaders know when they have to make changes in theirleadershipstyle and strategies to fit into new scenario. By adopting this theory M&S able to earn long term profit because they grab the opportunity when it was avail in the external environment. Organisation use new method in their working than it will benefit them in upcoming future. System leadership: System leadership indicate about the rules and regulation set by the top management which have to followed in the similar way by the leader without any kind of breach. Leader should make changes in their leadership style according to the organisation system. ď‚·Future growth-It create positive environment in the organisation that motivate employees to adopt new schemes and policies. When employees resist from changes than organisation not able to grow but when support it organisation able to achieve its desired objective. Contingency leadership: There are some situation in the human life and organisation working life which occur suddenly. At that time it is necessary to make changes in the management style to cope with such type of events. These are the leadership which was adopted in the organisation when some unusual event happen (Mohammadi and et. al., 2013). Under this leader effectiveness depends upon the how leader's style fit the circumstance.
