INTRODUCTION
Management and operation is a part of business practices, the administration of
companies are accountable to create great level of efficiency to managed day to day operations.
Operations management is concerned with transforming raw materials purchased through
suppliers into final products or services effectively. The present report is based on Morrison,
operating their business in UK and across the national boundaries effectively. It describes
information about company and their management structure. This study justify roles of manager
and leaders, differences between leadership & management. It explains, various roles of
leadership as well as management applicable to different situations in company, supported by
relevant theories. Furthermore, it clarifies the impact of leaders and managers on business, define
some possible suggestions for further betterment.

Company overview and its management structure
Online and offline supermarket purchasing or shopping is very easy at Morrisons, it is
considered as fourth biggest chain of supermarkets in UK. It was founded by William Morrison
in 1899, they began business as a butter and egg stall in Rawson market, England. Serving
consumer better, becoming more competitive, local solutions, simply & speed up, provide useful
and most popular services and making core supermarket power full again, are the 6 priorities of
this organization (Haleem and Jehangir, 2017). It recognized a chance to reposition itself as food
specialist within sector for everyone, they introduced market street concept to promote their fresh
food outlets and friendly consumers services in all over the world. They employed 110,000
workers and serves their products as well as services around 11 million consumers each week.
They have more than 490 stores in UK as it had 498 superstores across Wales, England and
Scotland. With the help of effective management structure the success of all the operation is
possible within Morrison wher range of skilled and professional applicants are working together
in order to achieve common objectives & goals.
The management structure of company is divided into sub sections where every one
performing effectively and complete their daily work on time.

From above illustration, regional manager is accountable for managing and considering
the whole of lower level workers, they effectively communicate with store manager to take
information about work practices and productivity of its workers within supermarket or store of
Morrisons. Furthermore, store manager is highly responsible to consider delayering chances,
increase flexibility of operations and modifications within stores via reducing unnecessary layers
of management which is quite beneficial for business growth as well as success within retail
sector.
Role and definition of managers & leaders
Manager is the person who practices managerial functions primarily, its duties includes
managing workers and other section of firm on daily basis. They are in charge of some group of
tasks and certain subset of firm. Manager plays vital role in company, they have to assure daily
activities of department and group of peoples work together. They perform functions like
staffing, controlling, managing and planning to gain competitive advantages. All these functions
is important for sustaining business effectively and running it smoothly within sector.
A person who are accountable to motivate workers, commands people and holds superior
position within organizations are known as leader. The role of effective leaders at workplace is to
formulate plans, define goals & objectives of business, organize staff to achieve specific aims

with the help of execution of plans prepared by leaders (Dhar, 2016). They lead people
systematically by influencing their behaviours in different ways or by using several approaches.

Employee resistance for changes-
It is the first situation, where leadership and management is play vital roles by using
relevant theories or concepts. As nature, resistance for changes is defined as inaction or reaction
towards change that management of Morrison want in order to increase their operational
efficiencies. For example, company want to make some changes in their existing business
structure, they cut down certain level in management that are unnecessary according to them.
This decision impact on workers' performance, it threatens all of them for cutting jobs that create
difficulties for employees.

Role of leadership-
Staff resist to change, they do not want to make any changes within management
structure. Sometimes people go on strike against company when they do not listening them, it is
very critical situation faced by business in which management and leadership plays their roles
differently.
Leaders with situational leadership, is able to understand the issues of workers and
motivate them to work after changes. The role of leader, with situational leadership is to inspire
employees to perform their task, they assure all the workers that changes within management
structure will not affect their jobs negatively, as it only increase their productivity.
Role of management-
As mentioned above, management deals with conflict situations in company, the role of
manager within contingency management provide better results as it help to handle the
situation perfectly (Becker and et.al., 2016). It is very important for manager to make workers
ready to except the changes, they have to resolve problems and conflict situation by planning
systems after considering the needs of workers.
Competitive environment-
Due to globalization, the competition among existing companies within retail sector is
increase rapidly. The organization feel pressure by external factors, they have to work quickly in
order to gain advantages of competition. Morrison put pressure on workers for performing their
task faster as possible as they can. Some people do not fulfil the needs of firm as they cannot be
able to work under high pressure because it impacts on their performance. This situation will
increase high employee turn over, that affect negatively upon organization productivity as well
as operational efficiency.
Role of leadership-
Contingency theory of leadership is one of the best leadership theories, it emphasizes
that effectiveness of leader is dependent on matching their style to right situation. To reduce
employee turn over, leaders of company with this leadership must find out the main reason that
cause problems, after that they can take actions accordingly.

in identifying kind of leadership that is likely to be good in particular situation.
Weaknesses of leadership methods-
Situational approach is focusing on current situation and immediate needs less than long

Th weakness of contingency approach is that it cannot be able to fully define why some
individuals are more effective leader in specific situations but not in others.
Strengthen of approaches to management-
Contingency approach to management, allows manager to change rules and policies
according to organizational situations.
Quantitative approach permit manager to take decision after analysing the overall
situations, it helps to improve decision-making procedures.
Weakness-
Quantitative approach applications is restricted manager in some areas where they cannot
be able to take proper judgement.
Contingency approach to management is difficult for empirical testing it being complex
and present issues in handling organization situation.

From above, it has been concluded that manager and leaders have impact on company
through their work. Leaders make positive impact on Morrison, they have power or strength to
influence organizational culture and motivate work force with the help of communicating and
