Introduction
In the current era, tourism based economic growth has turned out to be a significant result
of the public policy. Considering same, several researchers have started to address tourism
development from a viewpoint that is relied on cultural, economic social along with
environmental sustainability (Bramwell 2015). The objective of the essay is critically evaluating
the key management approaches to sustainable tourism using two selected case study
destinations or tourist areas. The need of sustainable tourism is considered important as the
tourism industry is one of the world’s fastest growing industries and is making huge attempts in
maintaining sustainable and responsible tourism practices. Due to some reasons such as
ecological balance disruption because of global warming, social values loss along with failure to
safeguard historical, social, and natural along with cultural assets makes sustainable tourism a
great necessity (Budeanu et al. 2016). Sustainable tourism is defined as a tourism that takes full
responsibility of recent and future social, economic along with environmental impacts that
address needs of industry, visitors. Environment along with host communities offers socio-
economic utility to the stakeholders. The two case study articles those are selected for analyzing
the strategic management approaches in supporting sustainable tourism are “The Future of
Sustainable Tourism” in Northern Ireland and “A Strategic Approach to Sustainable Tourism
Development Using the A’WOT Hybrid Method: A Case Study of Zonguldak, Turkey”.
Discussion
With staggering impact of the climate change and environmental issues there has been
increasing demand for sustainability in the tourism sector. Considering same, two articles are
selected namely “The Future of Sustainable Tourism” and “A Strategic Approach to Sustainable

Tourism Development Using the A’WOT Hybrid Method: A Case Study of Zonguldak, Turkey”
for comparing and contrasting “Strategic Approaches to Sustainable Tourism” followed in the
Northern Ireland Case Study and Turkey Case Study. From evaluating both the case study
articles it has been observed that Northern Ireland is observed increase in its international visitors
that is indicating further growth which has increased changes of high carbon footprint in the
nation. Considering such situation, certain sustainable approaches to responsible tourism
observed to be implemented in the Northern Ireland tourism destinations include Responsible
tourism, Green Tourism, Ethical Tourism and Ecotourism. EVOLUTION TREKS PERU, (2019)
indicated that responsible tourism in Northern Ireland tourism destinations includes certain
principles related to sustainable tourism and conversely it also refers to the consumer choice that
is the industry develops sustainable tourism in which a responsible consumer selects to
participate. Green tourism sustainability approach followed in Northern Ireland tourism
destinations is focused on developing low impact and environmentally friendly tourism.
Moreover, sustainable green tourism in the rein s also concerned equally with the economic,
social along with environmental effects of tourism. Considering same, green tourism approach is
focused totally on managing the environmental implications (Carr, Ruhanen and Whitford 2016).
Ethical Tourism sustainability approach followed in Northern Ireland tourism sector is
focused on gearing towards encouraging the consumer along with the industry in order to avoid
the participation within the activities which contribute or support any type of negative ethical
concerns such as animal welfare and social injustice. Ecotourism sustainability approach is
observed to be followed in the case study of Northern Ireland tourism in which it is considered to
be necessary in the destinations where flora, fauna along with cultural heritage is considered as
primary attractions. In this sustainability approach it is evidenced that the tourism industry within

the nation is focused on conserving or enhancing the tourism destinations in Northern Ireland
(Dangi and Jamal 2016). Successful implementation of such strategy is ensured through offering
volunteering and educational programs for the visitors.
The case study of Northern Ireland analyses revealed that the nation employs traditional
sustainable tourism practices in comparison to the innovative tourism approaches as observed in
case study of Turkey tourism. It has also been observed that Northern Ireland tourism
destinations are facing issues related with drastic and rapid climate changes because of
apocalyptic warnings of global warming, water scarcity and visitors populations in the region. In
dealing with such issues, it is observed that the nation considers following the principles of
sustainable tourism that considers safeguarding the authentic tourism products on which the
Northern Irish tourism relied on (Dedeke 2017). For instance, the tourism destinations such as
coasts and lakes, unique outdoors that are protected against social impacts of tourism
development. Best tourism sustainable practices that are followed by the tourism industry of the
nation are implements sustainable tourism approach through cared-for natural along with build
products that has closer associations with local communities those results in effective all round
visitor experiences. Moreover, from the case study analysis of North Ireland tourism it is also
been revealed that the nation is making great attempts in incorporating emerging suitability
tourism trend within the tourism sector.
From analyzing both the case study it has been analysed that sustainability tourism
approaches followed in Northern Ireland tourism sector is highly prospering that is anticipated to
attain a high growth in the upcoming years. EVOLUTION TREKS PERU, (2019) also added
that the major tourism sustainability approaches followed in the sector is focused around major
areas such as energy, transport, water, social and community, procurement, waste and
