Happiness and well-being at work
Introduction
Positive psychology is known as the science of positive aspects of the human life
which relates to well being and happiness. There are basically three levels of psychology
which are the subjective level, group level and the group level. Over the last ten years, a lot
of research have been done in the area of happiness by creating a wealth of empirical
knowledge about mechanisms and processes which will make people happy. Wellbeing is
also the subjective state of being happy, satisfied and healthy with one’s quality of life.
Happiness also includes physical, material, social as well as emotional and personal
development of growth and progress. the subjective wellbeing refers to a set of experiences
(Artz, Goodall & Oswald, 2017). Wellbeing programs are good at helping people for
adopting and maintain healthy behaviours. The wellbeing programs are known to improve
the health behaviours of the employees and also help in reducing the elevated health risks.
Workplace is known to be an important determinant of health and health related behaviour.
Many researchers have differentiated wellbeing and happiness. The pursuit of
happiness and well being have been extended to various organizations and had been
attracting a lot of attention throughout the research of positive psychology.
Defining happiness
The social researchers and the philosophers known to have defined happiness in
various ways. There are three level of happiness which are the momentary feelings of
pleasure and joy, flourishing and fulfilling one’s potential and judgements about feelings.
Since the year 1960s, the scientific disciplines known to have conducted research on
happiness for determining ho humans will be living happier lives (Franco-Santos, & Doherty,
2017). Aristotle states that complete virtue is one of the most important factors for achieving

happiness. Happiness also means doing good and it also depends on the exercise of the reason
and rational capacities. The science which focuses on happiness is termed to be the positive
psychology. Happiness can also be termed as doing good. According to the positive
psychology, the authentic happiness comes from identifying as well as cultivating
fundamental strengths by using them every day in love, work, parenting and in every aspect
of life. The happiness in life also comes from positive feelings and activities. According to
Losada, happiness also implies a life to grow, thrive, flourish in this world in a better
condition.
There is either hedonic views of happiness or endemic views of happiness. The
hedonic approach can be stated as the pleasant feelings or pleasure with favourable
judgements. The hedonic approach is based on the subjective well being and it comprises of
two correlated components which are judgements of life satisfaction and also affects balance.
It is going to affect more positive feelings and rare negative feelings. Happiness is therefore a
totally subjective feeling of the well being experienced by a person and is also characterized
by the positive emotions. The hedonic approach also comprises of affective experiences
which affects mood, emotions and describing individuals.
Wellbeing and happiness
Some of the research workers made a distinction between the concept of happiness
and well being while others consider well being as the symptoms of the happiness. Well
being is also the subjective state of being happy, satisfied and healthy with one’s quality of
life(Chancellor, Layous & Lyubomirsky, 2015).. Happiness also includes physical, material,
social as well as emotional and personal development of growth and progress. the subjective
well being refers to a set of experiences. Many researchers have differentiated well being and
happiness. According to some of the scholar’s happiness is nothing other than a state of mind
