MANAGEMENT OF SMART POULTRY FARM USING IOT
ABSTRACT
This project is to purpose a prototype of an IOT embedded system for the management of a
poultry farm in terms of health and work. IoT is one of the advanced information
technologies that connects two more physical devices with each other by using internet
connectivity. Smart poultry farm is one of the best applications of the internet of thing
technology that control and monitor the poultry farm using the fundamental concept of IoT.
This research study focuses on IoT technology and how this process helps consumers for
managing poultry farm. It is observed that the use of the internet of thing is growing rapidly
and many farmers are using this technology for controlling the poultry farm from any
location. With the help of this technology, several environmental factors can be controlled for
example temperature, ammonia gas, light intensity and many more. By controlling such kind
of key factors, the overall performance of poultry farm can be managed and IoT plays a
significant role in managing activities involved in the poultry farm.
In this report, we have introduced a general wireless sensor system that collects the data by
reading different environmental factors of the place in which the sensors are pronged,
exposed or directed.
In poultry farm production, humidity and air pollution are critical; during the summer season,
birds experience discomfort due to high humidity combined with high temperatures. High
CO2 levels result in lethargic chicks with reduced weight gains, while high ammonia gas
(NH3) level result in poor feed conversion, reduced weight gain and increased susceptibility
to disease. Smart poultry farm can be designed in way that the humidity and air pollution can
be controlled by ventilations, cooling and heater. Within this paper, the parameters, like
ammonia gas, water level, humidity and temperature are monitored and controlled using
microcontroller. The transmitted data should be received by receiver and then transmitted to
the ESP8266 module through the microcontroller. Data can be saved on cloud for better
analysis. [1]
We have come across different researches and findings in the topic for the knowledge,
working and the preparation of this report. We have used different methodology and
approaches for executing upon the proposed model.

INTRODUCTION
Automation is increasingly important in modern agriculture, reducing dependence on labour
and liberating farmers from constant work, increasing management scale and efficiency,
fulfilling the precision and consistency of product quality control, enabling enforceable
traceability as part of food safety efforts – all of which can help achieve agricultural
sustainability. Poultry farming is the process of raising domesticated birds such as chickens,
ducks, turkeys and geese for farming meat or eggs for food. This research focused on modern
technologies for poultry farming to control all environmental parameters like temperature,
humidity, ammonia gas that effects on the growth of the chickens. If the environmental
condition is not up to the mark then there may be harmful for digestive, respiratory and
behavioural change in the chickens. If chickens may get suitable atmosphere and proper food,
then it may grow rapidly, and health of chickens will be good, so their weights will increase.
Climate plays quite important role in the growth of the chicken. A hatched chick cannot
maintain a proper body temperature without help. In the first three weeks of its life, a chick
should not be exposed to cool temperatures. Exposing the young bird to cool temperatures
(20oC) for a day or two on the farm can cause the bird to die from heart problems later.
Hence, heated premises are a must for brooding. Temperature should be reduced by 3oC per
week, until the room temperature of 20oC is reached. After six weeks of age, desirable -
temperature range in 18 to 21oC. The most widely used source of heat, is a heat lamp for
small flocks of birds. [2]
In this report we have included seven sections namely introduction, project domain and
research questions, background and project objectives, project requirement analysis and
specification, references, appendix.
PROBLEM DOMAIN AND RESEARCH QUESTIONS
In this modern era, it is very difficult to control and monitor the efficiency of poultry farm
which is one of the common research problems. In the world, the poultry being the biggest
agricultural farm, is facing so many problems regarding the health of the birds and the overall
growth. Annually over 60 billion chickens are consumed all over the world. The most terrible
thing inside this business is that about 13.5 billion chickens in their different age die due to
various diseases annually. And the world is facing a great loss in this business, about 20% of
the total investment, which can be minimised effectively if we manage the poultry smartly.
This research study will help consumers for managing the poultry farm because it uses the
concept of IoT technology that could enhance the performance of poultry farm. The other
research problem is to collect relevant facts and information about the research topic. [3]
There are the following research questions related to the research topic:
What is the fundamental concept of the internet of thing technology?
How IoT help consumers for monitoring poultry farm?
What are the tools and components used in the management of poultry farm using
IoT?

BACKGROUND AND PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Literature review
Introduction of IT for standardized management of the poultry system has influenced the
poultry industry to grow like mushroom in the few couple of years. It is very complex for
controlling and monitoring the environmental factors related to poultry farm which impact on
the overall performance of the poultry farm. For reducing such kind of problem information
and communication technology developed a new technique which is called as IoT. This
technology can manage the complete process of poultry farm and data or signal can be
exchanged from any location [2]. This research project highlights key aspects related to
poultry farm and internet of thing technology and produces an IoT device to manage the
poultry farm. Mainly, the internet of thing technology involves various kinds of electronic
and electric devices for designing a device that controls the poultry farm in which wireless
sensor network is a very important component that controls the communication process
between sender and receiver. It is very complex for controlling and monitoring the
environmental factors related to poultry farm which impact on the overall performance of the

developed a new technique which is called as IoT. This technology has the ability to
managing the complete process of poultry farm and data or signal can be exchanged from any
location [2]. This research project highlights key aspects related to poultry farm and internet

the internet of thing technology involves various kinds of electronic and electric devices for
designing a device that controls the poultry farm in which wireless sensor network is a very
important component that controls the communication process between sender and receiver.
According to Hitimana, Bajpai, Musabe, and Sibomana, (2018). The IoT is an effective
technology for controlling and monitoring the value of foods. The researchers identified that
for interconnecting all the sensors devices to the microcontroller all sensors values are
acquired with the help of wireless networks. To control and manage the poultry disorders, the
investigators deigned a wireless sensor network using IoT. This implementation helped
consumers for increasing the standard and amount of chicken.
By using such kind of technologies, the poultry sheds can be managed 24 hours and IoT
technology connect two or more physical devices with each other for managing the
productivity of the poultry farms. This research focuses on the key factors linked with the
poultry farm and monitors the complete procedure of poultry farm by using high level
information technologies such as IoT, wireless sensor networks and microcontrollers [4].
In this research study, the poultry parameters such as ammonia gas, humidity, level of the
water, and temperature will be controlled with the help of the internet of thing technology.
There are two communication systems involve in the IoT devices such as transmitter and
receiver where the transmitter sends the signals and information and receiver receive these
signals or messages [5].Based on the poultry farm the advanced communication technologies
can be used in the development of IoT network such as wireless sensor networks.

MANAGEMENT OF SMART POULTRY FARM USING IOT
Handigolkar, Kavya and Veena, (2016) identified that low cost of production and large
individual involvement in poultry can lead to less profit and productivity. For reducing such
kind of problems a system can be designed that control the entire processes of a poultry farm.
It can be done with the help of the internet of thing and wireless communication networks
and several sensors. It is observed that for controlling the temperature of poultry farm DHT22
sensor can be used and for air pollution, MQ135 sensor can be involved [13].
In this modern era, many consumers and business industries use the fundamental concept of
IoT technology for monitoring the overall productivity of poultry farm. It is analysed that the
smart farm can perceive any changed information derived from a semi-automatic
microcontroller and other computer devices [6].The farming controlling system can be
controlled with the help of mobile and computer devices because advanced microcontroller
provides a platform to connect the entire system with mobile networks and exchange
information from any location. Therefore, the IoT technology is a very effective technology
that has the potential for controlling the overall productivity of poultry farm along with their
efficiency.
Objectives
There are the following aims and objectives of this research project:
To analyse the concept of the IoT technology
To design and implement an IoT project for managing the poultry farm
To enhance skills and experience in the field of poultry farm along with the IoT
technology
PROJECT REQUIREMENT ANALYSIS AND SPECIFICATIONS
For designing and implementing the poultry farm using IoT there are several sensors and
devices required that involves, microcontroller, wireless networks, communication
technologies, sensors for controlling temperature and air pollution and many more [12]. The
objective of the proposed system is to manage the ecological parameters of poultry farm with
the help of IoT devices and networks. Such kind of project can be implemented with the help
of R5F1001LE microcontroller because it is very easy to understand and connect with the
other electronic components [7].It is analysed that for designing and implementing the IoT
device for poultry farm consumers must have enough knowledge about circuit and software
used to run the programmes. However, there are the following specification required for
producing an IoT project to control the parameters of poultry farm:
Hardware
LCD
L293 IC
Microcontroller (R5F100LE)
