Introduction
Tourism is the fastest-growing sector that comprises of multitude of activities. Management
of tourism activities is essential for countries and for people as the tourism industry become
an important source of income for many countries. Thus managing tourism activities includes
managing destinations, accommodations, the number of tourists and management of its
consequences (Inskon and Minnaert,2018). However, on the other side managing
destinations includes the attractions, access, amenities, pricing and marketing of a tourist spot
across the world. Further, destination management considered as the process of coordinated
actions aimed to control the socio-cultural, environmental and economic dimensions of a
specific tourism destination (Morrison, 2018).
In order to understand the concept of destinations and tourism management a destination has
been chosen, that is Paris. Further, this report includes a detailed explanation about Paris as
a tourist spot, the reasons for selecting this destination are mentioned that includes; the
increasing number of tourism in Paris and its consequences whether good or bad on local
people. For a better understanding of the concept different theories are used such as
destination lifecycle, tourist’s receipts and carrying capacity. At last,the consequences of
tourism on people and in Paris have been included.
Paris
Tourism in Paris is a major source of income as in 2018; 17.95 million tourists visited the city
mainly for shopping and sightseeing (Kramer et.al,2019). Paris is characterized by
urbanization of area it lies within and its position in the Grande Couronne, Petite Couronne,
and IIe de France. Paris is a famous tourist destination in France and located in northern
central France. Paris covered an area of about 87 km2 and enclosed by ring road of 35Km and
the metropolitan cover 2,300 km2 of the city (Kramer et.al,2019).

Paris is a tourist spot because of the above destinations, culture, and artifacts. Due to that, the
city is seeing growth ina number of tourists on year on year basis. As of 2019, the number of
tourists in Paris increased by 9.7% from 17.41 million in 2017 (Paris Region,2019). Paris has
beaten London in the battle of a number of visitors in a year as for the first time in 10 years
Paris recorded a high number of visitors. In 2019, a number of visitors were 19.1 million
foreign visitors. But on the other side, in first-quarter Paris reported a tourism slowdown
because of many factors such as Brexit, economic difficulties and movement of the “yellow
vests” (Paris region,2019).
The major attraction spots for tourists in Paris are; firstly Paris symbol Eiffel Tower. This
spot experienced 14 million visitors in 2019 after that Notre Dame Cathedral is considered as
an example of French architecture due to that 13 million visitors visited this spot in 2019. The
least visited spot in Paris was the Musee Orsay and Centre Pompidou witha total of 4 million
visitors (See table 1). Paris destination strategy is the way that city use in order to attract
more number of visitors across the world. The destination strategy includes focus on
improving visitor experience and quality, and stimulating innovation by offering “federation
of the ecosystem of Parisian tourism”.
Paris is a city that contributed to the most in the growth and development of France. The
contribution of the travel and tourism industry in the gross domestic product in 2019 was
€681 billion. Further, the GDP of Paris accounted for 35% of the total GDP of France in 2019
(See appendix 1). On the other side, the tourism sector's direct contribution to the GDP of
France was 82.7bn EUR and direct contribution to employment generation in France was
1.992million jobs (Francetourism,2020). According to WTTC organization, travel and
