INTRODUCTION
Management operation management is the administration of business practices to create
the high level of business management growth. Effective management operations helps to
increase the outcomes which leads to high growth. Present study will be based on management
operation of Greggs which is the largest bakery chain in the UK. Greggs offers savoury products
such as sausage rolls and different form of sandwiches. Present study will be explaining different
roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager. It also examines the role of leader and
manger in different situational conditions. Thus, study will cover all important and necessary
aspects of management operations which helps Greggs to develop in more positive manner.

Differences the roles and characteristics of leaders & managers
Leader : Behind every successful organisation involves the higher participation level of a
leader. Leader always stands behind their employees to support them in every condition or an
uncertain situation (Chemers, 2014). Leader always make new working environment culture
within the working culture and make employees enthusiastic and challenging.
Manager : Manager is an individual who responsible to manage the work given to them
by the organisation within some time period. Manager is also accountable for making
management formal or sustainable by applying different management approaches.
1. Leader creates a vision, Manager creates goals
This is the first difference between the role of manager and leaders, leader always
focused towards the company vision. On the contrary, manager are responsible to create goal to
get the company goals fulfilled (Dinh and et.al., 2014). However, leader paints the picture to
engage the participation of employees. Contrary, managers focuses on settings and measuring to
achieve the goals and objectives.
2. Leaders are change agents, manager maintain the status quo.
Leaders are innovative and creative who always brings new way to perform the task.
Leaders Greggs leaders managing task into in the best possible manner. Apart from that, it
discovers the new creative way to perform the task. Manager stick with what works, refining
systems, structures and process to make them better.

or method. On the other hand, managers are followed the steps which has been done before.

In terms of taking risk, leaders are always had quality to take risk and deals with in
unique manner. On the other hand, managers work to minimise risks. Managers avoid the
problem rather than embracing them.

Functions of manager and leaders makes the organisation work in the direction towards
the fulfilment of the objectives of the organisation. Apart from that, it discovers the new
managing and long term relationship between the working goals (Goetsch and Davis, 2014).
There are different management approaches as well as leadership theories have been applied by
managers and leaders respectively to attained their task given by Greggs.
There are several management theories which applied with the leadership skill for taking
business growth ahead. Operational management department of Greggs focuses on the
management theories and combine the efforts of leaders to minimize the process costing.
Contemporary theory of management applied by Greggs in order to deal with the current
situations of the increased cost of the purchases and production (Meuser and et.al., 2016).
Leaders in Greggs used many of their skills and their potential traits to make employees
motivated and confident.
Classical management theory applied by Greggs which helps to enhance the productivity
among employees.

Situational leadership : situational leadership style I the another most productive and helpful
for the company success. This leadership style refers to when the leader or manager of an

organisation must adjust his style to fit the development level. In situational leadership style .
Leader telling and directing organisation functions and situational level of performance. Selling
and coaching style of leader in which employees supervised but it is in more coaching manner
rather than in management styles (Northouse, 2018).
Participating and supporting style of situational leadership is also more responsible or
follower. Under which leader always provides guidance to employees.
Systems leadership : System leadership approach generally adopted for new freshers or
the beginners. This leadership style lead across boundaries or used by different organisations as
well. This style of leadership in which leader guides to new employees to how to perform the
work. It also helps them to know some methods or ways to get over from the particular
situations. Greggs leaders guide employees about their customer policy and new different skills
to conduct the behaviour of customers. They guide employees to deal with clients. Along with
that, this leadership style is very much effective and productive to get the good response from the
customer sites (Northouse, 2018). Apart from that, it also helps to encourage new different styles
of methods through which company can easily maintain goodwill and quality of products.
Systems leadership style is very useful to make employees strong and productive to deal
with a particular situation. This style of leadership based on national systems' leadership
programs.
Contingency leadership : Contingency situational theories of leadership propose that the
organisational or work group context affects the extent to which given leader traits and
behaviours will be effective (Northouse, 2018). Contingency leadership applied by the Greggs
leaders which helps to use different skills and traits used by leaders in an uncertain situation.
Path goal theory is the concept involved in contingency theory in which leader identify
the situation with locus of control, work experiences and ability and need for affiliation.

material and defects. Therefore, overall performances of the organisation successfully
develop in the business environment. It also brings creativeness with applying betterment
of the organisation. It increases efficiency and effectiveness to implement appropriate
process among team. Manager always taking steps to focus on the appropriate working
with development of the creativity (Roth, Singhal and Tang, 2016).
Total quality management: In this process, efficiency bring in the production of the
business. With this regard, Greggs need to focus on continuous development and
improvement. Products and services of the chosen business also successfully develop
with maintain total quality management. Leaders play role to motivate their team

assists to take advantages to make appropriate decisions. Economic factors: Economic factors also create major impact on the results. This is
because, high growth of UK assists to Greggs to develop their brand performances in

to increase their brand performances in different areas of the world. It will also develop
several advantages to maintain more effectiveness. Legal factors: Greggs need to focus on some legal regulations and norms that assists to
maintain effectiveness in the business. With this regard, all regulations and rules of the
government must be followed to focus on the appropriate working in the business (Choi,
Chan and Yue, 2017).
Environmental factors: The chosen business need to keep safety in environment where
business is operated. In this regard, proper rubbish for waste material, support, etc. must
be implement. Greggs need to ensure that minimal environment effect taken which
emphasis on corporate social responsibility that assists to meet with positive outcomes.
