INTRODUCTION
Leadership is an ability of a person to guide and influence other people or the
organisations. It is a process which aims at shifting the efforts of the employees towards the
attainment of organisational goals while handling all the problems and competition effectively.
Management is a process of planning, implementing and controlling all the activities of an
organisation to achieve the target of the firm (Marshall, 2019). This report is based on Marks and
Spencer Group plc. It is a London based multinational retailer dealing in home and food products
and clothing mostly with its own label. The report is divided into two parts. Its first part
describes the characteristics and roles of the manager and the leader and their applicability in
different situations along with different theories of leadership. The second part discusses about
the approaches and importance of operation management and the roles of manager and leader in
it. It also mentions the impact of environmental factors on the decision-making process.

firm. They influence them to make efforts towards the targets of the company by their own will
as this can result in attainment of their personal desires like reputation, bonus, promotion etc.

Function of a manager-

Total Quality Management(TQM)- It is an approach which focuses on the long term
success of the product or service by satisfying the customers. This is a continuous process
which aims at detecting and eliminating all the errors in the various activities of business
like improving customer experience, supply chain management, training to employees,
manufacturing which either wastes the time or resources and increases the cost of
production (Zheng and et. al., 2021.). This framework focuses on creating such an
environment where the employees tend to improve the process of construction and the
