Management & OperationsP a g e|3Task 1: Differentiate between the role of a leader and thefunctions of a managerAldi stores have been extremely successful in providing value for money to itscustomers and the same has been possible due to the process of Lean managementprinciples it applies in its business operation. Lean production has helped Aldi toachieve operational efficiency by reducing certain costs, managing waste, keepingoptimum stock and training the employees across all business function. All thesesteps have been extremely helpful to Aldi and the benefit achieved by applying leanproduction are directly passed onto the customers (McKnight, 2015)During my tenure as a Trainee Manager Operations I observed how managers andleaders worked together to accomplish the common goals set by the management. Itwas a sight to encounter the ease of communication between the managers and theleaders, with little or no resistance being shown towards the business processimplementation. Based on my observation, I could come to a conclusiondifferentiating the roles of a manager and a leader. I would share some of the insightabout the same for a clear understanding of their distinctive roles and functions.Role of a leaderLeader is a person who leads the organization by defining and exhibiting moral andethical courage and setting an example for everyone in the business organization(Hill, Jones & Schilling, 2014) Leaders are the ones who are responsible for takingthe organization to the path of success and prosperity, their natural charismainspires the employees and develops a feeling of respect and trust in the leader. Aleader is a person on whom the entire company puts undisputed faith and trust andlooks forward to lead by example(Fayol, 2016) Hence, it can be said that the role ofleader in an organization is to lead people in achieving the goals of the organization,and this is done by influencing the employees, motivating them, guiding them in theirjourney, playing the role of a mentor, set goals for the organization and then setgoals for the employees, improve the work processes and boast the morale of the
