INTRODUCTION
Housekeeping department is an primary part of the hotel industry as they have the direct
communication with the customers. Forecasting is essential for any hotel as it helps them to prevent
the funds and result in increasing profitability for the hotel. At last, it is important to repair and
maintain equipments used by the hotel as it reflect the climate and culture of the hotel.
TASK 3
P6 Review the key roles found within the housekeeping department in a selected organisation.
Housekeeping department is very essential for any hotel industry and plays a crucial role in the
Marriott hotel as well and assist in cleaning and organizing hotel rooms in proper manner, which
leads to increase satisfaction level of the customers. So, there are some duties that are performed by
the housekeeping departments which are as follows:
Housekeeping department organize and monitor the work performed by the staff on daily
routine. It results in creating good impression in front of the customers and helps in increasing
the goodwill of the Marriott hotel.
This department provides safety and proper accommodation atmosphere for the customers, and
the hotel management try to give best services to their customers.
Hotel establish standard operating procedure for cleaning and develop new procedures to
increase efficiency of labour and product use.
Hotel provides budget and cost control system to the management through which housekeeping
department can evaluate their product cost accordingly.
Housekeeping department maintain and check the furniture’s item, uniform or all the
equipment’s of hotel daily.
Management also checks the regular reports like files, documents related to the cost incurred in
the work of housekeeping department. Housekeeping department is required to follow business
policies, legal terms and regulations and report maintenance problems of the hotel.
They should communicate politely and professionally with the potential guests and ensure
perfect working tool & equipment employed to determine high working quality.

Marriott Hotel has acquired a four-star hotel in the Cornish resort of Falmouth and wish
to turn it into a five-star hotel in coming eighteen months. Marriott can achieve this only when
the housekeeping service of hotel so bought is up to the expectation of customers.
This structure will make the whole work easy and manageable. According to this structure, the
ultimate decision to make policies will be with housekeeping manager, also, he will assist his
sub-ordinates. Assistant housekeeper will be responsible to manage and guide floor, desk, public
area, linen and uniform room, nigh supervisor and horticulturist. These have been allotted their
specific areas of operations and will be co-ordinated to have a smooth functioning. Customers
prefer hotels who provide hygienic, clean and decorated rooms with all facilities. Therefore,
Marriott should work towards making housekeeping department work hard and in an effective
way and also, create a co-ordination with all other major departments.

Housekeeping staff is responsible to make the rooms and the lobby in the hotel in proper
manner for the use of the customers. To keep the rooms and bathrooms in appropriate manner the
staff places required supplies. The importance of these supplies are as follows:
Guest supplies Importance
Bedding and Bedside Supplies These supplies consist of mattress, bed sheet, pillows, covers,
telephone, table lamp and a list of required numbers.
Hospitality Tray Hospitality tray includes items like tea, coffee bags, pouches
of green tea, sugar and milk powder. Electric kettle, water
bottles and cups. This is for the convenience of the customer
to make whatever they prefer.
Bathroom attachments These supplies includes items that are required in the
bathroom like showers, basins, hot and cold water connections
for the convenience of the customers.
Linen Stock The couple of pairs of a large and a small cloth is kept in
rooms for the guests, which they utilise accordant to their
requirement.
Vanity Tray It consists of bottles of shower gel, shampoo, face wash and
moisturiser for the customers use. It also carry a couple of
empty glasses, toothbrushes, and a bottle of gargles.
The supplies discussed above should be provided on time and proper stock should be

It is essential to make good relations between housekeeping and their other departments, in
which some are as follows:

Coordination of house keeping with HRM: Human resource management is the division
which exercise to hold the work force in the organisation. It is very essential for
housekeeping staff of Marriott to coordinate with the HRM, as this will assist in getting new
employees with full of abilities. They also help housekeeping in getting compensation
related to salary and over time.
Coordination of House keeping with front end office: This is important for Marriott to
have coordination between housekeeping and the front office division as this help them in
communicating details related to the residency, which make it easier to elaborate the
requirement of occupancy. This also help housekeeping in keeping the hotel premises clean,
and also front office make housekeeping avail about the customers, so that they can provide
proper care to them(Burton and Kellaway, 2018).
Coordination of house keeping with food and beverage: The staff of hotel takes care of
the food area as it is required to be clean and hygienic. It also helps in rendering welcome
drink and VIP amenities for the customers of the Hotel.

services set in place. Marriott should consider its guests as first priority and should make
arrangements for their pleasant stay. Maintenance is important for keeping the interior of hotel's
lobby and its rooms. Customers prefer hotels that are fully equipped with no problem of repair
works. Some of the maintenance works that should be considered are as follows: -
Repair and maintenance department: Repairing Works render Marriott the best range
of furniture maintenance service, carpentry maintenance service, bed repair & revolving
chair repair services with effectual & timely delivery(Brunner-Sperdin and et. al., 2012).
Plumbing and electrical systems: these divisions are the important units as they are
related to the convenience of the customers and any problem in these two services will
cause problem to them. The management is required to maintain a regular checking with
these fixings and required defects are used to be fix by time.

As, the Marriott is very well known in the hotel industry and serves a large customer base
all over the world. The hotel is required to take care of the customers to satisfy them and to
maintain the goodwill in the market. Security is very essential factor in this and it is required by
the staff, management and the customers to maintain a healthy environment for the business. The
importance of security are explained as follow:
Physical aspect: This includes security in he external environment of the premises that
will need lightning facilities, fire alarms, wire fencing on the boundary walls, security
guards at the gate, CCTV cameras to take care of every thing.
Safety and security of a person: These security measures are for both the staffs and the
customers. The management should appoint guards to secure the entry's for unauthorised
person in the staff area as well as for the customers also. Customers should be provided
with the safety lockers for their expensive items and assess to the lobby or room area
should be prohibited for the unauthorised person(Buhalis. and Amaranggana, 2015).
