MANAGING ORGANISATIONS AND LEADING PEOPLE
Introduction
Reflecting on my characteristics features, I can say that I am an outgoing and
ambitious person. I have always been sure of what I was doing in my life and where I want to
reach. I never restricted myself to only studies, even when I was in my schools. I am
competitive in nature and ready to explore new aspects of life. I prefer to be around people
more than solitude and like to gain their insights on different subjects of life. In my opinion,
a balance between work and personal life is the most important part of career development
planning. I prefer to reflect on my experiences so that I could use them in my future ventures.
I would like to establish my own business in future in the sectors hospitality or sports tourism
sectors. As a leader, I would prefer to lead my team from the front and achieve my goals
within the set time span. I have a passion for travelling and exploring new things and places
in life.
My Journey so far
From the very beginning of my understanding, I was quite serious about my studies.
When I started dreaming of my future, I was sure that education would play an important part
in it. According to my understanding, education makes the person ready for facing the future
challenge. I never lose focus from my studies at the same time I have tried to carry on with
the passion for sports and travelling. I think one should have the patience and ambition to
follow their dreams. I have the target to manage my own business someday. I would like to
pursue my dream with all my potentiality. This is why I started to do my post-graduate
studies in the arts. Though my study is not related to the business idea, I want to use. Still, it
has an impression on my decision making abilities. I decided to start my own business
because I get motivated by the insightful minds I have met during my graduate and post-
graduate days. The entrepreneurs and their innovative ideas have influenced my decision of

doing my own business. I have some of the leadership traits I believe, and that would help me
in doing something creative and impactful in my own business. Besides, I think, as a business
owner, I would get more freedom and scope to improve my efficiency and skills.
Childhood
As a child, I was a bit fun-loving and extrovert person. I was good at my studies, and I
also like to play football. I was competitive in my studies as well as in the sports that I
participate in. I liked to be the class leader in my class and tried to help my friends with the
assignments. In my childhood, our family used to travel a lot. Every year we use to visit new
places at least twice at the time of my school holiday. Travelling has made me diverse. I still
like to meet new people and know about their cultures and ideas. My outgoing nature has
given me the opportunity to have a number of friends, and I am still in touch with them. My
family values taught me to be adaptive to the situations and cope up with it whenever needed.
There is no doubt in the fact that my childhood learnings have helped me a lot in shaping the
ideas of different cultures and people. I am open to a new connection with people, and this
has started from my childhood itself.
Professional Career
I am pursuing my post-graduation studies so that I would be able to have perceptions
of business companies. I would like to join the post of managers in the near future and
develop my skills in business management through direct experience. After doing my
graduation in arts, I got admitted to the management courses to earn a degree in the business
field. The reason for my doing the post-graduation is to achieve academic and practical
knowledge of the management aspects. Therefore, the current role is the student of
management courses that are helping me to gain knowledge and insight into my future goals.
I have been able to access various resources through the course that have influenced my

professional goals. I want to know of the leadership and management traits from this
education so that I would use them in practical scenarios and achieve success in future.
The Next Steps within My Journey
I would like to join some prestigious organisation afterwards to earn some experience
in leadership and organisational management. Alter in my life I have the ambition to start my
own business in hospitality or sports tourism. I would like to infuse my study and experience
together at once to achieve my career objectives. I am the person who likes to be the leaders
and lead from the front. The leaders of an organisation must have some definite leadership
traits and idea of how business works. This is why I want to observe the work process by
working under the trained mind. This would give me the overview of the responsibility and
requirements that I have to fulfil to run my own business successfully. Other than that,
working in an organisation first would also provide me with some numbers of contact
networks that I could use in my business outreach.
Reflection on my Leadership Competencies
Leadership competencies are the traits and capabilities that help the leaders to manage
their teams and making decisions for their work process. I could say that I have some of the
leadership traits or competencies like great communication skills and outgoing adaptive
nature, at the same time I lack one of the most important aspects of a great leader or manager.
That is conflict resolution. In any organisation that works with the diverse workforce, conflict
among the people is natural. It is obvious that the people of the team would have different
types of mindset and thought process. The conflicts in the organisation could follow at a
different level of the hierarchy as well. I get really confused and lack confidence whenever it
comes to conflict management.

MANAGING ORGANISATIONS AND LEADING PEOPLE
As an organisational manager, my employees would definitely want me to be able to
resolve the inside conflicts among the employees as well as the wider conflicts. The lack of
this trait in the manager could actually be the reason for bigger discrepancies. My boss would
definitely not like the idea that his or her manager is not capable of resolving the conflicts
effectively. Therefore, this would be the first thing I would like to achieve as my leadership
traits by working on it.
What I learnt in LMDP
There are a number of things I have learnt from the LMDP. The subjects that I have
learnt from this LMDB has changed some of my visions on leadership and organisation
management. The first thing that I have learnt doing the subject LMDP is different traits of
leadership. I have learnt that a leader has to be adaptive to the changes that could happen in
the organisation. The changes are constant. The changes are designed in order to give
competitive advantages to ten organisations. Therefore, one must know how to drive the
maximum advantage from the change management. I have learnt time management and its
importance.
The organisation managers mostly suffer from a lack of time as they do not give
importance to this aspect of leadership. Third thing I have learnt from this LMDP is group
work. Team works are an essential part of organisational success. The leaders have to work
with his team and make the team effective. The fourth thing is the improvement of
communication skills. Along with all other entrepreneurial skills, communication is the most
important skill that the leader must possess in order to have a balanced and transparent
channel of information. The last but not the least thing that I have learnt while doing this
LMDP is self-assessment. This is the part of leadership that is directly related to the personal
development of the leader. One must not forget to reflect on their work achievements and

make necessary changes according to the lacks. All these aspects of this LMDP have proved
effective in shunning my skills as a leader or manager in any organisation.
Personality
As the manager of an organisation, there are some personality traits that I must
possess. Managing the executives and organising and designing is one of these important
traits of leadership. I need to improve productivity through improvement in these two parts of
leadership. A good communication skill could be diverted to a strong interaction only if one
knows to use it properly. I lack the competence in managing the executives and driving and
motivating them for better results. This needs to be done through understanding the
individual potential of the team members. The leader needs to understand the motivators for
individual team members and work accordingly.
Another important aspects that I need to improve are the organising and designing for
the team operations. The leaders have a plan and organise the way a team would work. By
doing this one can set the objectives of working and align them with the results (McShane et
al. 2018). The team members would work with a vision and target to achieve the goal if the
leader could provide them with required support and resources. Designing project operations
and organising the task in the proper way is necessary for doing that. This is the reason that I
have to improve my organising skills and learn to design the project functions in a definite
way.
Self-concept
Knowing what one can do and what needs to be changed in themselves is the most
significant trait of leaders. Self-concept is related to self-esteem. It is said that a leader must
have positive self-esteem in order to succeed in his ventures. Psychologically, the valuation
of self-image gives perspective to the person, and it becomes clear what is to be changed and

MANAGING ORGANISATIONS AND LEADING PEOPLE
which part is to be nourished in a person’s character. Self-concept is important because what
a person feels about himself is reflected through their performances.
I have both positive a negative characteristic of mine that influences my leadership
skills. The thing that I do not like is my indecisiveness. Sometimes I take longer to decide,
and that impacts my performance. This is the result of my lack of experience. I think as I do
not have much experience in this working sectors, I sometimes lack the confidence to take a
quick decision. I bother too much what would be the right decision in that particular situation.
This results in waste of time and resources and I could face problems in my leadership
aspects if this becomes permanent.
What I like about myself is my communication skills and adapting nature. I like to
initiate a conversation and know about others vision on a matter. This gives me an idea of
how I can think of something from different perspectives. Again, my adaptation power is a
string. Therefore, I could easily adapt to the changing circumstances and work in it quite
efficiently.
Drive
Challenges and creativity motivate me to do anything in life. I have a competitive
nature from the very beginning. This is why I perform in my best form whenever I am
challenged. I believe in taking calculative risks in leadership. The manager has to manage the
workforce at large. There would be many instances in my work life when I have to take risks
to succeed. I love to experience these challenges and prove myself through it. Creative
instinct and innovative solutions to the problems keep me going in the process.
I want to do something unique and creative in the field of sports tourism. This is the
sector that is blooming very fast in recent days. I would like to explore the possibilities of
sports tourism in games that are less popular in comparison to mainstream sports. This seems

9
MANAGING ORGANISATIONS AND LEADING PEOPLE
to be a challenge to me as I have to go extra miles. The popularity of sports would not be the
same as the mainstream games, yet I would like to have some creative exposure t this sector
of business. I am not being able to start my own venture in it because I do not have ample
knowledge and experience in managing teams of people. As the founder of the business, I
have to be active and ready with instant solutions that might come in the way. Another
obstacle is financial support that I have to find yet.
Integrity
Honesty is at the top of my priority as a leader. I think I would be able to earn
integrity in my work only if I am honest to myself and the persons I am working with.
Leaders are the pioneers. The followers have to have trust in their leader, and therefore, the
leader must be honest in his approach to the other members of the team.
The second value in my work process is Equality. I believe in the workplace equality
and giving equal scope to each and every member of the team the same scope to prosper. The
leader should know the specifications of each of the member of the group and help them
equally to develop their skills and competencies in the organisational background.
Transparency is another important value of leadership according to me. I prefer to be
transparent in my work process so that there be no confusions or miscommunication among
the people. Transparency of the managers results in the work motivation and job satisfaction
of the employees.
Leaders need to be knowledgeable and full of wisdom about his work and vision. It is
important that he transfers that wisdom to his people in order to gain organisational
objectives in a definite way.

Leadership Motivation
I want to grow and develop my leadership skills with time. I want to provide my team
with an environment that would attract them to their job roles. If I am assigned the role of the
manager, I will ensure that each and every member of my team is getting enough exposure to
career development. I would concentrate on my personal growth, as well. I would try to
improve my defects and grow as a leader. I would like to take calculated risks in my own
business venture and improve my experiences and work ethics continuously.
Emotional Intelligence
According to the emotional intelligence theory of Daniel Goleman, the key elements
of EI are Self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. These
elements build the core of a person’s emotional intelligence. Self-awareness helps the person
to analyse what is his strength and weakness. This leads to self-regulation, where the person
sets their moral and ethical requirements in order to achieve certain targets. Motivation is the
stimulus of a person to act consistently towards goal achievement. The motivating factors are
the reason that a person tries to fulfil the targets through continuous actions. Empathy helps
the leader to understand individual thoughts and approaches. Social skills are the most
important aspect of a leader’s emotional intelligence. The more the person is able to connect
with people socially, the higher is the emotional intelligence of the person.
Self-assessment is important to increase self-awareness and self-regulation. I would
work on my self-assessments aspects to shun these two components of emotional
intelligence. My professional goals are my motivators. I would try to gain knowledge and
imply them in practical life as much as possible to stay motivated. Communication with
people is instrumental in increasing empathy and social skills effectively. I would like to
meet new people and know their stories to increase my social skills and knowledge base. All

MANAGING ORGANISATIONS AND LEADING PEOPLE
these would help to improve my emotional intelligence in leadership and business. Emotional
intelligence is an integral part of leadership traits. The person who is able to improve his EI
could achieve greater goals in business.
My Perception and Potential Growth Areas
According to my perception, learning, capability and social skills are the two key
components of leadership development. One who wants to be great leaders must have the
open mind to perceive and learn things (Daft 2013). The experience that he would gather
from day to day situations would be instrumental in making necessary changes in his
approach. Social skills are related to communication and presentation. Effective
communication is an integral part of any leadership. In order to manage an organisation, one
has to understand the various types of communication and its importance. If the leader does
not have the social skill, he or she might find it difficult to prepare their networks. This would
be the reason of their disadvantages in the market situations.
The areas of my traits where I would have to achieve potential growth is my decision
making skills and conflict resolution skills. I believe that these two are the main areas of my
leadership traits that I still have to improve.
Conclusion
Leadership and managing organisations is not an easy task. I had realised this much
before I started working on my managerial skills. As I want to start my own business, I need
to have knowledge if the procedure and experience of the same from the real situations. This
self-assessment report is helpful in analysing my strengths and weakness. This is instrumental
in developing the career towards my set goals. This could be concluded from the above
discussion that some of my leadership traits are having a positive impact on my wok results,

MANAGING ORGANISATIONS AND LEADING PEOPLE
but there is still a huge scope of improvements. I would achieve higher goals if I could
manage my skills and wisdom in a definite way.
