Section 1: Question 2 - Competitive Advantage, Porter’s Generic Strategies
Brief critique of Porter’s Generic Strategies argument
Porter’s generic strategies are able to describe the ways by which an
organization is able to pursue the competitive advantage across the chosen scope of
the market. The companies can aim at implementing three different types of generic
strategies that include low cost strategy, differentiated strategy or the focus strategy.
The organization can thereby aim at pursuing one of more than one types of the
competitive advantage that can be gained in the industry that can either be based on
the low costs or by proper differentiation of the products or services that are offered to
the consumers. The companies can also choose a single strategy or a combination of
two generic strategies in order to gain an advantage in the respective industry (Nickols,
2016).
Developing a table that records the features of the competitive positioning
strategies of the chosen organization
The business strategy implemented by Apple is mainly based on the ways by which
the OS of the organization can be designed and developed.
Apple aims at providing highly differentiated products to the huge number of
consumers in the highly diverse market that includes personal computers, mobile,
tablets and portable media based player.
Apple aims at providing its products to the consumers in different market segments
that mainly include PC market, tablet market, MP3 players based market and the
different wireless communications based market as well.
The marketing activities of Apple and the design of hardware of the organization are
also an important aspect of the competitive strategies that have been implemented by
the organization (Vishnevskiy, Karasev & Meissner, 2016).

Areas in which the chosen organization can fit on the Porter Generic
Strategy Model
The generic strategy that has been applied by Apple for the purpose of
maintaining its operations in the industry is termed as broad differentiation. Generic
strategy of the organization is mainly focused on the various features that are able to
differentiate Apple from the other organizations of the competitors who are a part of the
industry. Apple has been able to stand out in the market with the support that is
provided by the implementation of broad differentiation strategy. The competitive
advantages that have been gained by Apple are mainly based on the design of the
products that are offered to the consumers in different parts of the world (Ansoff, Kipley,
Lewis, Helm-Stevens & Ansoff, 2018). The design of the products is mainly able to
include the cutting edge aesthetics and the seamless levels of connectivity as well. The
implementation of generic strategy has been able to enhance the difference levels of
Apple in comparison to the competitors who are a part of the technology industry
(Demir, Wennberg & McKelvie, 2017).
Apple has been successful in gaining a leadership position in the technology
industry with the support that is provided by the high value based technology business
and competitive advantage as well. Apple has also been successful in penetrating the
market and developing a loyal consumer base with the help of proper application of
Porter’s generic strategy (Ansoff, Kipley, Lewis, Helm-Stevens & Ansoff, 2019). The
business growth and expansion levels of Apple have a key influence on the
development of the proper operations of the organization in the technology industry.
The broad differentiation strategy of Apple has been able to add the competitive benefit
that is gained by the firm in technology industry. The design and product functions will
also be able to support the future processes of Apple in the industry (David & David,
2016).

objectives of Apple have been implemented with the proper support that is provided by
the broad differentiation based generic strategy of the organization. The implementation
of research and development based activities by Apple has played a key part in proper
enhancement of the differentiation strategy and positioning of the firm. Apple has
thereby aimed at the development of innovative and high value based products in order
to maintain the competitive advantage in the highly competitive technology industry
(Cokins, 2017). Continuous innovation has been able to play a key part in proper
fulfillment of the strategic objectives that have been developed by a major organization
like Apple. Apple however does not aim at focusing on a specific segment of the market.
The organization on the other hand aims at enhancing the customer base of the firm
with the support provided by the information technology industry and consumer
electronics segment as well (Durand, Grant & Madsen, 2017).
Section 2: Question 4 - Strategic Choice and Development
Critical review of strategic drift
Strategic drift of an organization can be mainly defined as the gradual
deterioration of the competitive actions that can result in failure of the organization
based on acknowledging and responding to the changes that can take place in business
environment. The strategic drift based term can thereby be used for the purpose of
describing the sense of the cognitive sloth that is a part of the ability to meet various
original objectives that have to be fulfilled by the organization in an effective manner
(Hanson, Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). The major symptoms that are related to
proper implementation of strategic drift are considered to be the homogeneous mind set
at the managerial and the board levels. The major causes that are related to the
strategic drifts that can take place in the organizations are mainly related to the
cognitive mapping and the organizational culture as well. The strategists in this case are
able to develop the cognitive symptoms that can be limited by the levels of intuitive
thinking (Andersen & Torp, 2019).
Issues for the organization’s managers when preventing strategic drift
Strategic drift can take place in the organizations if the managers are not diligent
enough and it is considered to be important for them to understand causes of the
objectives of Apple have been implemented with the proper support that is provided by
the broad differentiation based generic strategy of the organization.
Continuous innovation has been able to play a key part in proper

phenomenon that can take place as a part of the process. The process of strategic drift
can take place with the proper implementation of four stages. The four major stages and
phases that are a part of the strategic drift process implemented by the organizations
include incremental changes, strategic drift, flux and transformation change (Wolf &
Floyd, 2017). The complacency of the management and lack of flexibility based on
change perspectives of the organization can lead to the implementation of strategic
drifts in the firms. The proper development of an agreeable culture of the organization is
also able to enhance the levels of success gained in the industry. The lack of proper
understanding of demands and needs of the consumers can have an impact on the
levels of strategic drifts that can take place in the firms. The managers of the
organizations can thereby play a major role in the ways by which strategic drift can be
reduced in an effective manner (Staessens, Kerstens, Bruneel & Cherchye, 2019).
Suggestion of ways by which the organization can avoid strategic drift
The managers of Apple will be able to play a main part in reducing the strategic
drift that is a part of the operations of the organization. The development of a fearless
culture within the organization is also considered to be a key aspect that will be able to
reduce the chances of strategic drift in Apple. The vision statement of Apple can
strongly lead to the reduction of the levels of strategic drift within the organization
(Dalcher, 2018). Managers will also be able to play a key part in the methods by which
flexibility levels in the operations of Apple can be increased. The enhancement of the
levels of diversity and flexibility can have a huge impact on the ways by which strategic
