INTRODUCTION
Managing people is one of the major tasks for any company’s top-level management,
because by managing people or employees within workplace the company can achieve its
decided goals in the market. Currently existing management within many businesses are taking
various innovative steps towards properly managing people or employees within workplace.
There are people management is directly link to these activities which has taken a company for
systematically marinating high performance and productivity if existing employees. This report
discusses people management within Morrisons. It is a popular retail company, headquartered in
Bradford, England, UK. Currently this company has workforce of 110,000 number of
employees. Some major employment contracts also have been discussed in this report. On the
other side, various benefits and disadvantages employment contracts to employer and employees
also has been included in this report.
MAIN BODY
Employment Contracts
Currently employment contracts play very effective role within the Morrisons for both
employer or employees. Basically an employment contract has always signed between parties,
employer and employee. In this contract, Morrisons always mentioned those all policies, rules
and regulations, terms & conditions which an employee needs to follow while working in this
company. Generally, employment contract provides legal support to the company and its
employees (Chang, 2018). On the other side, top-level management of the Morrison has highly
required to consider these employment contracts within its daily operations, otherwise company
can face different legal issues like; penalty, court hearing etc. Reason is, currently each business
or company within the United Kingdom is highly responsible to follow or adhere those laws
which the local government has imposed on different businesses. In this situation, these
employment contracts are also major part of the UK’s business law. This is the main reason that,
top-level management at Morrisons should always consider these contract within its business
environment. On the other side, an employment contract gives opportunity to a business for

properly managing its people or employees as well. That’s why these contracts are too necessary
for this retail company. There are some major employment contracts has been mentioned below;
Zero Hour Contract
Zero Hour contract is an employment contract between employer and employee. Under
this contract employee do not need to serve any minimum hours of wage per day. In this contract
employee joins organization for the specific reason to operate any operation function in Morrison
Company. As long as employee complete the operation management relieve the employee from
the functional role. This is an effective employment method which allows company to conduct a
particular operation function at a more affordable price range. Employees also not restricted in
this contract to serve the organization for the limited period of time (Ollus, 2016). This
employment contract caters flexibility to employees which also allows employee to balance the
work life. This employment contract does not associate any extra condition of employment that
associated in general employment contract which also facilitate employees to not to feel any
burden while operating functional role for the Morison Company. This employment contract
provides more relax atmosphere to employee to earn money. Employee joins the organization
under this employment contract is skilled and experienced enough to meet the professional
requirements of the associated job position. Organization also does not need to channelize any
specific skill development campaigns to improve the professional capability of the employees
assigned at different job positions in organization. This can be containing as the important nature
of zero-hour employment contract under Moriston Company. This aspect of the zero-hour
contract make work cheaper than in other employment contracts. This contract also improved the
organization culture of the Morison Company.
Advantages
1. This is a great advantage for all the individuals of all ages which are going to make the
organization and the employees benefit from this factor.
2. There is flexibility in the working works but the target for each day should be met in the
Morrison. Employee’s satisfaction is higher in this contract type which can make the
organization benefit a lot.

3. This kind of contracts is mostly used for production purpose in Morrison so that the
organization does not have to pay the employees according to the hours they are spending
but per day and the targets completion (Ahammad and et.al., 2017).
4. This is a very simple method which the organization can use if they want to have cost
saving in the organization and for the employees to have satisfaction as well.
Disadvantages
1. The quality of the products in Morrison can get affected which the leaders and managers
will have to control and monitor so that the organization does not lose their loyal
customers.
2. There is no financial stability in these kinds of contracts and the employees can be asked
for not coming for the work and they do not get paid for that day.
3. These have mostly college students in it which are not skilled and experienced in the
industry which can make the standards of Morrison get affected.
4. The zero contract depends on the budget of the organization which is going to affect the
overall growth of the organization in the market.
Part Time Contract
Currently part time contract is one of the most popular employment contracts within the
United Kingdom (Zhen., and et.al., 2019). Many employer and employees within this country are
taking huge advantage from this legal employment contract. This contract also has signed
between an employer and an employee. In this situation, there is Morrisons company takes huge
advantages from contract. Nowadays there are large number of employees are taking in this
company’s daily operations. In the existing workforce of the Morrisons, currently lots of
employees are working in this company on part time basis. The company already has signed part
time contract within its those employees who are part time employees of it.
Basically, this employment contract is a licence to a person for working in the Morrisons
as a part time employee. In the United Kingdom, mainly students use this contract for part time
working in a company or business to earns some money while studying. But Morrisons also
provides part time job to only those candidates who fulfils all requirements of the company by
education wise, talent wise, skills wise and knowledge wise. Top-level management of this retail

company already made a policy for part time workers. In this situation, company sign this
contract with only those candidates who perfectly fulfils all terms and conditions of the company
(Ghignoni, Croce and Ricci, 2018). But while developing part time employment contract, the
Morrisons need to avoid mentioning those all terms and condition which can violate the UK’s
employment law. On the other side, company has required make a favourable part time contract
which a candidate can easily sign in the company. This is really very productive employment
contract to both an employer and employee. There are some major advantages and disadvantages
of part time employment contract has been discussed below;
Advantages
1. This employment contract helps to an employee for making work life balance, because
when any person works part time, then it can easily maintain proper balance between its
professional life and personal life. On the other side, Morrisons is able again an effective
workforce through this employment contract.
2. The Morrisons is able to reduce its employment cot without reducing its employees in its
business environment. On the other side, this contract support to that employee who like
to work in different locations.
Disadvantages
1. By singing part time contract with Morrisons an employee can’t earn that salary which
has earned by fulltime employees, because in the part time working an employee can earn
salary only on the basis of its working hours. On the other side, Morrisons needs to
provides that same training sessions to its part time employees which it has provided to
its fulltime employees, in which this is not a favorable deal to the company.
2. A part time employee can’t full focus in its existing workplace, because its mindset not
works as fulltime employees (Golding, 2017). On the other side, counting working hours
for part time employees is something complicated task to the company.
Term Time Working Contract
Term time working contract is another useful employment contract which can support to
the Morrisons for properly managing its people or employees. There is term time working
contract provides a specific way the Morrisons for properly arranging a particular number of

hours, weeks or months per year to allot an employee. Employees which has signed term time
working contract within this company are responsible to work in such time which has allotted by
it acceding to its comfortability. An employee is also able to take huge advantages from this
employment contract. For example; this contact gives opportunity to an employee for taking paid
holiday when it has required. On other side, this contract also helps to an employee for making a
specific balance between its personal life and professional life (Bernstein, 2019). There are
various terms and conditions an employee needs to read in this contract before singing this
contract with Morrisons. On the other side, company also has required to mention only those
terms and conditions, rules and regulations in this contract which has decide by the local
government in employee welfare. An employee can complaint about company it the court, if
company not properly follows employment law while sign this contract with it. In this situation,
top-level management of Morrisons should properly consider all legal and ethical considerations
while sign term time working contract with its employees. There are some major advantages and
disadvantages of term time working employment contract has been mentioned below;
Advantages
1. Term time employment contract always enhances employee’s productivity and
performance in the workplace. On the other side, by using this employment contract,
Morrisons can easily build effective employee relation within its business environment.
2. An employee can feel some freedom within its workplace by signing term time contract
with the company (Agarwal, 2017). On the other side, company is able to take an
effective work from its employee through this contact, because when employees work
with free mind in the workplace, then they can put their huge efforts in the workplace.
3. The Morrisons can increase loyalty of its existing employee by using this contract,
because most employees always be loyal within such organisations which properly
follows terms of term time working in its workplace.
Disadvantages
1. The Morrisons always faces some problems and difficulties in coordinating projects and
scheduling projects or tasks with those employees which has signed term time working

employment contract with this company. On the other side, employee can face some
communication barriers while communicating with its upper manager or leaders.
2. The company can’t easily increase its employee retention, if company highly use this
contract in its business environment. On the other side, an employee who has signed term
time contract with company can’t take such advantages in the workplace who has taken
by regular or fulltime employees.
3. The top-level management need to put some extra efforts for taking an effective work
from term time working employees (Virgolino, Coelho and Ribeiro, 2017). On the other
side, an employee always has required to stay connected with its upper management. In
this situation, that employee can face issue like; lack of personal space.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that the top-level management of Morrisons is highly responsible to
employ these all employment contracts within its workplace for properly managing people or
employees in its workplace. These all contract can give opportunity to company for increasing its
existing performance and productivity in the UK’s retail industry. Currently major competitors
of the Morrisons are taking huge advantages from these employment contract. In this situation,
Morrisons also need to properly use these contracts in its daily operations for gaining huge
competitive advantage in the retail industry of the United Kingdom. On the other side, company
will be able to gain an effective workforce also by employing such employment contracts within
business environment, because most employees always like to put their huge efforts where
exiting management properly follows different employment contracts.
