INTRODUCTION
In this Report, we are looking to identify the problems that can be faced by the local residents on
the decision of the 3rd runway and sixth terminal at London Heathrow Airport. Report will also
highlight the depth to which individual’s life has been affected by the decision related to the
expansion of Heathrow Airport. Managing quality is the act of overseeing all the activities and
task needed to maintain a desired level of excellence. This involves a determination related to the
policy of quality, designing and developing quality planning and assurance, and control of
quality and quality improvement. Present study will lay emphasis on London Heathrow. It is one
of the major international Airport established in London, United Kingdom. It is one of the sixth
international airport which is serving greater London. The airport of Heathrow is utilised by over
80 airlines and is flying to over 185 destinations in 84 countries.

Arguments against on the decision of 3rd runway and sixth terminal at London Heathrow Airport.
The UK has the 3rd largest aviation network in the world and London’s airport serves more
route than any other airports in the whole Europe. But it has been analysed in the case study that
London and the south-east part are now facing long term capacity problem. This issue is having
an adverse impact on the UK economy and affecting the country’s global competitiveness. For
overcoming this problem, the cabinet has taken decision of 3rd runway and sixth terminal at
London Heathrow Airport (Bell, (2016). This plan of cabinet is being opposed by the local
residents of London, South-East and the green group. They have argued that expanding the 3rd
runway and sixth terminal on the London Heathrow Airport will be useless and unnecessary. It
will affect the life of the local residents and will also create huge amount of noise and air
pollution. It has been analysed by the activists and the environmentalist that the expansion of the
Heathrow Airport can take the lives of thousands of people. The more emersion of carbon
dioxide in the air can cause hurricane and even the hot drought. This can affect the living lives of
the people adversely. The arguments against this decision are following:
Population density against the flight path will increase
It has been analysed that the business establishment of Britain has become obsessed with
expanding the Heathrow airport and they are constantly seeking the support of building the 3rd
runway at the Airport. They have become the prisoner of the conventional wisdom that has been
trapped in the past. The main reason of not expanding the London’s biggest airport is that the

population density against the flight path will increase, the vast bill appalling geography, the
constant degradation of environment, increase in the noise and air pollution and the wretched
management record of the owners of the London Heathrow Airport. By increasing the 3rd runway
the density of population per unit area will increase which means the country has to spend a lot
of resources and money to fulfil the needs and demands of so many number of people. Also the
Heathrow Airport is one of the major densely populated area in the London. The Airport is
severely constrained in terms of space not only for its runways but also for its terminals. It has
been analysed from the local residents that the noise coming from all the flights flying from
airport is only intolerable. Further expanding the Airport will make their life worst. There is a
large body of people that believes that airport should be built up somewhere else in London.
Heathrow airport in a densely populated area can be a trap for the people who are living near the
airport and can cause harmful effect to their health and there are various health risks which can
cause long-term effects and can proved to the fatal for life of people who live near the airport.
Including Noise pollution, there are others factors which can be harmful such as : Odors can be
the major problem associated with the airports, the toxic emission released from the aircraft
contains VOC'S ( volatile organic compounds) and nitrogen oxide which can pose to serious
health issues to the human health. These emissions released from aircraft are very smelly and
exposure to them cause respiratory problem and headache , Further expanding the Airport will
make their life worst and frustrated
There are some of the major Political factors which makes it clear that the Heathrow’s
expansion idea must be dropped down by the government. It includes the following:
The UK’s labour party has tried to block the constitution of the 3rd runway at the
Heathrow Airport, London. The major reason behind this is environmental concerns. If the
labour increases their price, then it will be very difficult for the government to build up the 3rd
runway and sixth terminal at the London Heathrow Airport. It has been analysed that the current
conservative minority government which has previously accepted the accepted the judgements of
airport commission back in October 2016, is now thinking of opting for expanding the Gatwick
Airport, instead of London Heathrow Airport. Also the suggestions are being made by various
opinions to use expansion of the regional airports instead of Heathrow solution. Moreover, it has
been analysed that the labour union in the country is fully against of the decision related to the

expansion. The labour union in the country has opposed this decision making of expansion of
Heathrow Airport. They have also considered to go on the hunger strike.
Compulsory House purchasing impacting the community
As it has been known that the decision of 3rd runway and 6 terminals will affect the life of local
residents. People living over there has put down the point that Heathrow cannot even decide
whether they want their house or not (Oskam & Boswijk, (2016.). They say that the government
is very indecisive about this problem. Many people are facing issues to even plan for the future
of their families. It is one of the major social factor that has been affecting the decision. They
can-not sale the house as because of the policy given by David Cameron’s no ifs and no buts.
The house of the prices is also increasing and it is very difficult for the people by the village to
purchase or sale the house. Heathrow is not able to decide if they want houses of villagers or not.
Government is also not sure whether to purchase the house of the villagers living in that area or
not. This has been quiet hectic and frustrating for the local residents living over there. Also
increase in pollution is one of the major concern for the people living in that area. Organizers has
been also trying to put pressure on the labour union to oppose the decision of expansion of
Heathrow airport. As this decision can affect the lives of the normal people (Schuckert, Liu &
Law, (2015).
It has increased the frustration of people. due to the decision of 3rd runway and 6th
terminal, the people living near the area of construction are being forced to migrate from their
houses to the other houses which the government will provide, but it can affect the lives of
people living there as they’re not only forced to leave the community in which they're living but
they also have to leave their friends and families, thus it is a serious social factor which the
government have to consider. It is very difficult for the people especially old aged people to
migrate from one place to another and to purchase a new house. Not even this, it decision of
making 3rd runway could ruin the future plans of the families as the idea of migration could
disrupt the future plans and budgets of the families.
The most negative point for the expansion of the third way is that the tax payer money is
being used to subsidise runways cost and infrastructure. The houses of the local villagers will be
bought by Heathrow it means that the people will not even lose their house, but also
communities friends and families. It has also been analysed that expanding the Heathrow airport

will destroy around the lives of 10,000 people. Also it is very difficult for the old aged people
living over there to find themselves a new home. Also the pollution and noise will affect the life
of many individuals. It will force every person to leave. The airport authorities will also leave
and will drive back which would worsen the roads more. The elderly people and the tenants will
be left back. Also the life expectancy of the people will be reducing due to so much of air and
noise pollution (Kotler & et.al., (2017).. There is also a group of individuals who believed that
no capacity of airports must be increased or planned for London on environmental grounds. The
tenants and the elderly aged people will be the only one which will be left out. This can hamper
the quality of their life and also with the increase in pollution a lot of people can suffer from the
health related problems due to extreme air and noise pollution.
External increase in carbon emissions, noise and air pollution.
The activists have opposed to the plan of government’s Heathrow expansion plan. They
have protested against this decision of government by calling it an environmental catastrophe.
Environmentalist has also warned the government that the Heathrow will have a long lasting
effect on the both air and noise pollution. It is one of the major environmental factor affecting
the decision of government for expanding the London Heathrow airport. Also to oppose this
decision made by the government a group including a priest, a farmer and the pensioner have
pledged to begin a hunger strike for protesting against the expansion of Heathrow Airport. It has
been analysed that the catastrophe climatic condition has been killing thousands of people. This
issue has been skipped from the discussion and also government has overlooked that the place is
developing the most of the carbon dioxide in the country (Gursoy & Sandstrom, (2016).
Decision of 3rd runway cause make the people unhealthy and according to the researcher ,loud
noise could instantly boost the sleeping person blood pressure, which can lead to heart failure,
stroke, heart attack, kidney failure. Noise pollution through air traffic can be irritating which
damages human health.
Noise, Odors, Ozone, soot, ultra-fine particulates are some major problems which people faces
who live near the Airport. The emission comes out from the aircraft's contains large variety of
elements(chemical) which includes ozone, which is a powerful oxidant that affects the tissue of
respiratory tract. Exposure of ozone can make it difficult for the people to breathe.
The challenges are both meeting target on emissions and specifically on noise and air pollution
as the expansion at Heathrow can make meeting the carbon emissions target to near impossible

and from this, the local public will suffer. They say that the third runway would kill more public
through hotter drought and powerful hurricanes. Also in the European heart journal , a researcher
measured the pressure by the remote of 140 volunteers in every 15 minutes while sleeping in
their home and the digital recorder determines that the noises had the worst impact on the blood
pressure of the people living nearby the airports (Bretherton, (2017).
Environmentalists has also warned the government that the 3rd runway and sixth terminal
will kill more people. As the climate change and more carbon dioxide in the air can give rise to
hot droughts and more powerful hurricanes. The labour party HQ in London has also began to
start their hunger strike. The organizers are making sure that the labour party oppose the plan of
expansion of Heathrow Airport when they come before the parliament. The activists are more
concern about the air pollution, noise pollution and dislocation of the normal people. The
escalating protests come as it emerged that a coalition of four local authorities and environmental
group Greenpeace are considering mounting a fresh legal challenge to the plan. Also the
government has implemented the act related to the UK climate change. This means that the UK
carbon emission cannot be any higher in the 2050 than in 2005. As it has been analysed that
currently one passenger who has been travelling from Heathrow to New York generates the same
amount of emissions which the average European will use as the average European family will
use to heat their home for the entire full year. Also the noise and air pollution that will be created
while expanding the Heathrow Airport can reduce the quality of life of people and also can affect
them adversely.
Adapt and limit the growth of business trips rather than expensive travels
The expansion of the Heathrow Airport will adapt and limit the growth of business trips
rather than the expensive travels. The technology is also expanding and the Heathrow Airport
has adopted various new techniques to serve the customers (Bowie & et.al., (2016). They have
the high planning management and high fly-tech that can make the expensive travels more better.
The new 3rd runway will also make more air traffic as more flights can fly on the runway now.
Also it has been analysed that if the more runway capacity is needed, the government must need
to expand its capacity on the Gatwick Airport. It can also be much cheaper and environment
friendly to the country and local people. It is true that new capacity is needed, but government

must also realise that the new runway schemes will simply increase the cost and expenditure of
the government. It can also crash and hamper the living standards of local community. The
expansion will lay more focus on the expensive trips rather than the business trips. These trips
can lessen the importance of the business trips and the business travellers can suffer.
CONCLUSION
From the above study it has been summarised that the Heathrow Airport expansion has been
protested by the number of groups, local people and green people. They have led the point that
the development of Heathrow Airport can affect the life of people. This expansion can also
create a lot of air and noise pollution. It has also been analysed from the report that the expansion
of London Heathrow Airport can has increase the price of houses for purchasing and even for
selling. This has adversely affected the lifestyle patterns of the people living over there. Also it
has been analysed from the report that the expansion of Heathrow London Airport has also
reduced the growth of business trips rather than the leisure trips.
