INTRODUCTION
14.9% of the total population of New Zealand
is Māori population (Stats NZ, 2019).
Māori people has experienced the racial and
ethnic discrimination based on their identity
and skin colour for decades.
Predominant white and European health care
professionals discriminated Māori people.
Lack of knowledge and socio-economic
structure are the primary social determinant
of health for the population (MacIntosh,
Desai & Lewis, 2013).

Māori Population
Male: 73 years
Female: 77.1 years
European Population
Male: 80.3 years.
Female: 83.9 years (Ministry of
Health NZ, 2018).

OBESITY AND MORTALITY
12.3% Of 2-14 year old Māori
children are obese increasing from
2006/2007 which was 8.4%.
32% Māori adults are obese
increasing from 2006/2007 which
was 29% (Ministry of Health NZ,
2017).
Mortality rate of Māori male is
746.5 and female is 567.8 among
100,000 people (Ministry of Health
NZ, 2018).
