INTRODUCTION
This essay revolves around Martin John Bryant, an Australian mass murderer. He is
responsible for Port Arthur massacre, where he killed 35 people and injured 23 people. This is
considered to be one of the worst shoot sprays all over the globe. He was entitled to 35 life
sentences along with 1,035 years of imprisonment Bahar, N. H. and et. al. (2017). His
imprisonment is strictly without the possibility of parole. This report uses the trait theory and use
it as a tool to get insight on Martin John Bryant's mind in order to figure out the reason behind
how the killer inside of him was originated. The report also reflects on the incidents that took
place with him since his childhood that established the outline for his mental state. The essay
uses the Quay's theory of criminal subtypes along with Eysenck's Theory of criminality and
synchronise the core behind between two in order to support Martin's behavioural aspect in this
study.
MAIN BODY
The report revolves around Martin John Bryant and the massacre that he initiated. The
basis of analysis is Theory of Trait that establishes an outline for getting an insight in Martin's
mind. In addition to that Quay's theory of criminal subtypes and Eysenck's Theory of criminality
are used as well in order to categorise his mental state into a defined unit. In order to draw
reliable conclusions dynamics and situation since Martin's childhood are taken into
consideration. Martin's mother stated in an interview that he has always been a different child
when it comes to the aggression traits Cohen, S. (2017). She stated that Martin had a tendency to
break his toys no matter what emotional sentiments he had towards them. According to the
details collected from Martin's mother's interview he always had troubles retaining his job
because he had attitude issues and the employers were unable to entertain the same Esquivel‐
Muelbert, A. and et. al. (2019). This attitude of Martin's ave always put him in trouble. He have
been a part of such incidents since childhood. In accordance to the information collected from
the locals, and as far as they can recall, Martin once pulled a snorkel from a boy while diving,
although the situation was controlled but this could have caused the person his life. When asked
about it he told the interviewer that he enjoyed it. He didn't had any reasons behind it, he just did
it because he thought it would be funny to do so.

The aforementioned situation further clarifies his mental state and his lack of empathy
and compassion. In addition to that he once cut off his neighbour's tree even after knowing that
the tree held a sentimental value for the family. This establishes an outline for evaluation on the
basis of irrespective of his knowledge he knew that he didn't even think about how his actions
are affecting others. During the time of his schooling his teacher descried him as unemotional.
According to his teachers he was always distant from reality and did not cared about the trivial
conventions. He committed many actions just to annoy and irritate those around him without
even having any reason. In accordance to the trait theory his cardinal trait were dominant over
his overall personality. In his school time he was also considered violent child and he was bullied
multiple times in school. These all incidents accumulated together and shaped his mentality since
childhood. Being a victim of bullying at such a small age redefines the way a person thinks and
analyses things. It was because of ignorant behaviour from his parents and bullying in the school
time that he lost his sense of empathy and compassion. In 1977, he was suspended from New
Town Primary School as well.
In his interviews he also admitted to torturing of animals. He stated that he did it because
he was unable to pick out his anger on anyone else and he was so neglected during his childhood
he didn't even had anyone to share his thoughts with. He kept quiet and faced bullying and when
he tried to fight back he was considered to be violent. Although he was admitted to school back a
year later under the condition that he will behave better, but there were several complaints about
his where he was reported to tease children younger than him. He was also sent to a special unit
of school where children who were mentally different from others were taught. But his overall
academic and behavioural aspects deteriorated over time till the end of his schooling. He was
reported to annoy others and say things that triggered those around him and was unable to stop
even after many counselling sessions. Analysing these traits in accordance to the trait theory it
can be said that the secondary traits in a person which takes places under certain conditions were
absent in his childhood. He lacked sense of belongingness, compassion and empathy towards
others. Being a target of bullying really took away any chance that he had at getting better
Hagan, F. E. and Daigle, L. E. (2018).

psychiatrist for the consultation and the psychiatrist gave them the feedback about their son as he
had the disabilities related to reading and writing and he faces problems when interacting with
someone and talking to other individuals Lanier, M. M., Henry, S. and Desire'JM, A. (2018).
Martin Bryant parents ignored his disabilities as they didn't take much interest in their problems
which resulted in the major problem for the Martin Bryant. Due to his inability in reading and
writing he had to leave his school and it affected his studies. Martin was also suffered with the
Schizophrenia which is explained as the psychiatric disorder and in Bryant had symptoms of this
as he suffered with hallucinations, had delusions and he also started hearing voices during his
childhood. During his childhood he usually watched TV and do some household chores and after
his parents looked into his disabilities his parents made some efforts to save him from becoming
any worse. During his childhood he also worked as the gardener for the sometime and his parents
also tried to make his state better and helped him in improving its intellectual but no such
improvement was shown by Martin Lorenzo-Oliveira, D. and et. al. (2019). During his trial
people who stayed in the neighbour of Martin Bryant stated that he used to carry air gun and he
often fires at the people who come near the highway to buy something. These were the initial
signs of his mental illness which was ignored by his father and his mother if he was monitored
carefully by his parents and his parents would have sent him to the mental illness centre then it
might be possible he doesn't have to suffer with his problems Moosavi, L. (2019). During his
trial court ordered to understand the mental health of the Bryant and court appointed psychiatrist
for him and stated that Bryant was suffering with the mental disorder and he is suffering with the
Asperger Syndrome Muscarella, R. and et. al. (2020). Legal counsel of the Bryant also took
permission from the court to examine his mental health and it was found that he was socially and
intellectually disabled. This showed that his mental health wasn't very good since his childhood
and lack of attention to his disabilities have affected him more and worsen its situation. His early
signs which was recalled by neighbour stated that he always carried the air gun and if the father
of Bryant or neighbours would have taken any steps towards solving his problem it would have
worked in the favour of his mental health. Bryant signs of violence showed that he was suffering
from the anxiety and disorder and his violent nature can affect someone's life but his father
avoided his violent nature and in the future it resulted in the Port Arthur massacre and it was one
of the deadliest shooting spree in the Australia Naffine, N. (2018).
