• Opioid is a common

of medications like, pain
killers and aspirin.
However, opioids are also
present in illegal drugs
like heroin. Excessive
consumption of opioid,
especially in combination
with other drugs, could
lead to opioid overdose
which is often
characterized by
respiratory depression

RESEARCH FINDINGS
• Despite the fact that the opioid crisis
is rising at an alarming rate, most
hospitals lack support and
infrastructure to provide effective
treatment for the same. This has
resulted in increase in deaths due to
opioid overdose (Drugabuse.gov).

• There were more than 3500 deaths
related to drug overdose in a year.
• Everyday, at least 115 people die in
the US owing to opioid overdose
(Rudd et al.)
• Deaths resulting from misuse of
fentanyl, a kind of opioid, has
increased since 2017 in the United
States.

CONCLUSION
• Keeping in mind the growing rate of
deaths due to opioid addiction, it is
important for Mayo Clinic to come up
with an effective plan for pain
management which avoids risk of
addiction. Most importantly, support
must be provided to patients
addicted to opioids, so as to rid them
of addiction in a healthy and safe
way.
