This course covers providing services to people with coexisting mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) issues. It includes understanding the signs and symptoms, building effective working relationships, and reviewing available service options. The course also covers developing and documenting a plan, and handling issues that may be outside the scope of the worker's services.

Activity 1A

The possible signs and symptoms which can indicate a person can have co-existing
mental well-being and alcohol and other drug issues such as having inability to
maintain the employment, agitation or aggression, legal issues, suicidal thoughts and
feelings, financial issues, consisting inability to maintain the functional relationship.
In addition to this, having extreme mood swings or the incapability to control their
emotions and many more. Within this, sometimes the signs and symptoms of the
mental well-being conditions as well as the Alcohol and other drug issues are same so
people can have required to take the time in order to effectively determine the specific

The co-existing conditions generally occurred in the case scenario are a person having
bipolar disorder. patient generally informed her support worker about that when she
has difficulty in sleeping during the manic phases, the patient will sometimes use
heroin in order to help her relax as well as sleep.

As per her conditions, she is not able to sleep properly and due to all this, she uses

The substance used by the person is heroin and having bipolar disorder, person used
heroin for relieving from pain and feeling sleepy. Heroin is a depressant drug, the immediate
effect of heroin gives relaxing, pleasurable feeling of well-being and relief from physical
pain. The long term effect on heroin on the body includes respiratory illness, muscular
weakness, depression, loss of memory and insomnia, it can also lead to cause the infection of
blood vessels. The person having the bipolar disorder and heroin may affect and cause manic
and depression, the short term affect is pleasure and pain relief and long term effect is slow
breathing and confusion. The effect of heroin on medication is causes resistance in their
medical treatment.

There are different things which are helps in building relationship with Supporting
individual with dual diagnosis by respecting and listening the person carefully. Positive
relationship may build on respect, better understanding and establishing a supporting

health issues and AOD. A good communication skills is used for building the effective

pain but also causes side effects on their mental health. The support provided to a person
with bipolar disorder which includes medication and positive environment by which person
get satisfied and also starting recovering from their mental health issues. They may activity
taking a step towards recovery phase and supporter may helps in participating decision
making which can help them to cope up with their mental health issues. By adopting various
strategies they are able to control their behaviour and satisfied with the care service. They are
recognize themselves that they are working for them while adopting supporting environment
and services. Sometimes they are feeling that services and supports are not relevant and
beneficial in reducing my mental health issues. The perspective on collaboration and
coordination is the patient is that bringing service together and offer a best quality care and

support to them which helps them to coper up with their mental health issues and reduces the
side effects of the person by managing the health and behaviour. The outlook includes that
person with bipolar disorder is supported by the supporting team and get satisfied with their
services.

will a various services and approaches which are more essential for a person with co-existing

includes the services which is adopted by the person to cope up with their health issue.
Among the various strategies and approaches which is relevant for the person is also the
question which is arise from gathering information. It also includes the services which gives

With the help of supporter person make the action plan which includes that they participate in
decision making an also start visiting on centres by which they can cope up with their mental
health issues. They decided to avoid the environment which gives the negative thoughts and
revisiting to their doctor for reassess her mental health condition.
They should addressed their problems and concern with the supporting individual
about their health issues and habits which they are doing in managing the health concerns.
By sharing the problems and concerns they have such as they are facing with manic,
depression and insomnia.The services provided in rehabilitation centres are appropriate and
beneficial for their health condition by which person can cope up with their mental health
issues.
At the end they adopted various strategies by which they can get back to their older
health by avoiding the consumption of different AOD substance.

Some potential risks which are associated under the working community services as well as
the people with co-existing mental health or AOD issues are injuries and accidents, violence,
along with stress.
Injuries and accident- an individuals who are working in community services may be at risk
of common injuries or accidents such as slips, trips, fall as well as some cut. The common
injuries are caused by slipping on the wet surface, tripping over some objects as well as cut
itself in case of handling the sharp objects.
Violence- the patient or people with co-existing mental health along with AOD issues may
sometimes cause unpredictable or challenging behaviour. Due to this challenging or

unpredictable behaviour of patient may sometimes leave an individual to open threats or
some actual violence.
Stress- in case of working with people with co-existing issues, an individual’s needs to
develop strong emotional strength. There is need to develop trauma coping skills in order to
deal with the situations.
Therefore, some legislation was place within the organisation in order to ensure the safety of
the worker. So that they can fulfil their duty in safe environment. The whole responsibilities
to make some strategies in to place in order to prevent the injuries or hazard control is on the
organisation.

When working or supporting a person with co-existing mental or AOD issues then some
conflicts may arise. Whereas, conflicts can be a disagreement, argument, clash or any kind of

incompatibility arise between the people. When working within the community services some
conflicts are inevitable which can lead to a violence. As conflicts can be arising due to many
cause, in order to manage such conflicts some appropriate methods can be used such as De-
escalation techniques, Conflict resolution as well as negotiation skills.
The de-escalation techniques are used to reduce the intensity or to escape the growth of the
conflicts. This method helps in improving the situations or avoiding the actions which could
make worse. The de-escalation methods may be used in case of uncontrolled scenario such as
in case of violence. However, conflict resolution and negotiation skills are used in case of
imminent conflicts. There is need to use some skills in order to resolve the conflicts. The
conflicts resolution involves compromise or negotiation, compete or fight, avoidance,
collaboration as well as smoothing over the problem.

example the people with co-existing disease get uncontrolled in front of an individuals
and tried to harm the individuals, person attempt to commit suicide, person showing
sign of serious self-harming as well as person attacking verbally, physically as well as
sexually to other person. When an individuals experience any kind of emergency
situations the first things an individuals do is seeking assistance, not need to hesitate,

feel free for seeking helps from any one in case of emergency situations because they
are all under the controlled of organisational rule and regulation. There is a rule and
regulation that person can seek assistance from anyone in case of an emergency
situations.

The duty of care ensures safety and protection, it comes under the legal concept of
negligence. Whereas, dignity of risk may dependent on personal choice as well as on self-
determination. It emphasises that what level of risk are comfortable for the people.

policy which might affect the duty of care and dignity of risk such as Mental Health Act
2013, Human Right Act, The Privacy Act 1988.

One of my relative was admitted at the services centre but due to some emergency condition
the doctor's at the service centre referred my relative to other service centre. The other service
centre immediately admits the patient and start providing service. As decision to referred was
made by me because the patient need immediate treatment which was not present in previous
service centre. The regular follow-up and the patient conditions evaluation are done by doctor
for speedy recovery as well as patient growth. Some follow-up or evaluation are done by me
in order to do comparison of overall service centre as well as service taker. I keep the all the
record maintained in a proper document format in order to communicate the patient
conditions to my senior authority.

supporter and the supervisor about the what and how the support was given and the

Harm minimization are the programs, policies and practices which work with the
objective to declines the harms associated with the consumption of drugs and alcohol
and the people who is consuming all these are not able to or not willing to stop it.
Basically it minimizes the negative impacts of drug use on the health, social and
mental well being.

There are several legal and ethical consideration for dealing with the people with
coexisting issue. Some of them are discussed below :-
 privacy, confidentiality and disclosure:- This protect the privacy by making sure that
the persons personal information is properly gathered, stored and utilized by the
supporter. The supported can only reveal the personal information in restricted
condition in which the person with co-existing issue or the other responsible member
have consented to do it.
 duty of care: - It describes a state where the supporter have the duty of maintaining
the wellness, safety and well being of the person with co-existing issue so as to assure
that the person does not experience any indefensible harm or loss.
 Codes of practice: - This is based on the encouraging the best exercise for the public.
It involves the standards of conduct, activeness and knowledge for the people who are
using the health and social care services.

triggers associated with these risks and suggest what is that you could prevent them
from occurring

 There is a spillage on the kitchen floor which is triggering the risk and harm of
someone safety. It can cause slip which leads to bruises or broken bones. This
spillage can be avoided with cleaning the spillage on time.
 One of the team member is very passionate about the soccer and have several
arguments in the past which leads to physical violence, risking everyone at that
situation. For avoiding this, be ensure that the topic of soccer is not discussed and
does not put anyone at risk.
 A person used to visit his cousin who has co-existing issue. There are always
drugs and needles around him or lying on the floor which is triggering the safety
risk of someone as it can lead to HIV, Hepatitis B & C, or any virus into the body.
This can be avoided by cleaning the wounds under the running tap, and let the
wound bleed out.
