Introduction for the vlog
The health issue that I have chosen for this narrative video is mental health issue in
the Berwick community. The main rationale for choosing mental health for this community is
due to the fact that 11.5 % of the population suffer from mental health issue. 16.8% have
been diagnosed with depression and anxiety .Anxiety and depression is mainly found among
the younger age groups due to professional issues or substance abuse. The mental health issue
among the older age group is mainly associated with dementia.
Determinants
The fieldwork in the Berwick region has helped me to identify some of the social
determinants that are responsible for the prevalence of the mental health issues in people
residing in this region. They are- isolation, lack of interactive community activity among the
elders, anxiety and depression among the younger age group due to excessive workload,
socioeconomic disadvantages, disrupted family and relationship issues (Holwerda et al.,
2012).
As stated by Allen et al., (2014), anxiety among the older people is caused by some
factors - many of the older couples have to live in isolation, may be as their children stays
away from them due to employment requirements or due hostile relationships.
In order to reduce the level of the mental health disorder, government have funded
many community health care centres .But a gap is still left in regards to the availability of
trained mental health nurses. Nurses can provide therapies such as counselling and verbal
therapy or cognitive behavioural therapies (Goldberg & Huxley, 2012).
Description
In order to obtain these handful of information I had to conduct an extensive field
study in the Berwick region. Truly this field work had changed my perception regarding the
roles of a nurse that is nowadays not confined to assisting of physicians. Nurses now play an
active role in any community care approaches.
