MENTAL HEALTH 1
The discussion is based on the “Essence of Mental Health Nursing’. From my
perspective, I consider that the essence of the mental health nursing based on the relationship
between the nurse and patient because its presence eases the medical procedure of treatment.
Additionally, Therapeutic relation considered as one of the strongest predictors of successful
treatment.
Initially, mental health nursing is a medical practice that involves supporting patients that
are suffering from the issue of anxiety, depression, certain addiction and disorder. In order to
treat the patients with the mental issue, the medical staff has various roles including visit to
patient home and monitoring progress. One of the major roles is to develop a relation with the
mentally challenged patient (Jobs, 2019).
It is a challenging process, as it requires continuous involvement of both the individual. It
is not an easy task, as it requires immense time and dedication to develop such harmonious
relation. It requires making the patient belief that he/she will be safe from the mental destruction
and injury. It is usually done by initiating face-to-face meetings with the patient. Additionally, it
requires immense dedication to acknowledge the gloomy story of certain patients. However,
there is not a fixed approach for this process as it differs from individual to individual
(Wiseman & Tishby, 2017).
It offers several benefits to the therapist as well to the patient. It makes the medical
procedure easier and less time consuming. It assists the therapist in learning effectively about the
suffering of the patient thus treating him/her more effectively. It helps in enabling fast recovery
of the patient. It helps to deal effectively with the patient without any forceful method. Through
this, therapist is able to gain the trust of the patient and find ease in conducting the required
medical treatment (Bowen, 2012). Additionally, it helps the therapist to gain an effective
response in respect of the medical treatment. It promotes openness thus supports in easily
tracking the patient recovery progress. Moreover, it encourages the positive interaction and
results in increased wellbeing. It also assists in reducing anxiety, depression and developing self-
confidence in the patient. It concludes that ‘Therapeutic relation’ has enormous benefits in the
mental health nursing. Hence, it considered as a keystone in the mental therapy and patient
healing process (Hickson, 2017).
