Rationale for proposed clinical supervision
The main reason for conducting clinical supervision related with mental health is to
ensure quality care to client along with ensuring professional development among clinical staff
in a systematic and planned manner. As clinical supervision enable the determination of quality
care with respect to client so this supervision plan will deliver better care to client along with
ensuring continuous professional development of clinical staff. This supervision will also lead to
the performance of related activities in a planned professionalized manner so that the respective
client will be benefited at large (Corey and et.al., 2020). An implication of clinical supervision
may also lead to enhance the standard of healthcare sector. In short this clinical supervision will
lead to have improved care of client, development of professionalism and maintenance of ethical
standards in the concerned field. This will also lead to have a development and raising of skill
among clinical staff along with enhancing treatment effectiveness, retention of client and
satisfaction of staff too will be grabbed by clinical supervision.
Assumption and operational definitions
Assumptions:
 Non universal applicability is the main assumption behind clinical supervision. This
means that it is not mandatory that the same supervision will be applicable in case of
dealing with health condition of every type. As different situation requires different
assumptions.
 Being having an association with human being and mental health, it is not necessary that
the applied assumption will work on all the clients equally.
Definition:
Clinical supervision:
It is a formal alliance between two persons may not necessary between more and less
experienced workers in which supervisee 's work will be monitored and supervise by supervisor
with an assurance of delivering best services to client along with professional development of
supervisee (Falender, 2018).
Mental health counselling:

Here the role and work of supervisee is major wherein it will make supervision of the
mental health of its clients and then make discussion with its supervisor (Valach and Young,
2017). This will lead to knowledge development of supervisee along with enabling professional.
Appropriate practitioner:
It refers to a healthcare professional like doctor, pharmacist, nurse who are authorised to
prescribe medicine.
Chaperone:
It is an independent person generally a healthcare professional whose role is to make
observance of the prescription, consultation or procedures undertaken by doctor over the patient.
Contracting body:
It refers to an organization that employ employees and healthcare professionals against a
contract of rendering services.
Prescription-only-medication:
These include the medicines which are prescribed by appropriate practitioners and is
responsible for the treatment of an individual. These practitioners may includes registered doctor,
paramedic, pharmacist or nurse.
Significance of clinical supervision
To nursing professionals:
It is important for nursing professionals because it will lead to have a reduction of their
stress and raised mental peace (Mohamed and Mohamed Ahmed, 2019). Clinical supervision
also lead to increase retention of nursing professionals.
To organization:
It will lead to raise the standard of the concerned organization. This is because when the
supervision will be enabled by professional and trained staff and medical personnel then it will
lead to have better client satisfaction which in turn raise reputation and standard of concerned
organization too.
Towards personal development:
This is the major importance of clinical supervision. This means that with the adequate
supervision concerned professionals may develop their existing skills (Staples-Bradley, Duda
and Gettens, 2019). It will lead to have a professional development of concerned personnel.

Towards customers:
Clinical supervision will lead to have an enhancement of experience of customers. This is
because this will lead to have satisfied customers in terms of availing better care and the
services.
Critical thinking and reflection:
In addition, of delivering these benefits and importance, it is also necessary that the
healthcare professional and practitioners may adopt the concept of critical thinking and
reflection. This means looking at both the side of the given treatment with respect to the client. It
includes the wider and broadening of thinking and thoughts so that best services will be availed
to clients.
Literature review
According to the views of Johnston (2017) reflective practice refers to a state of
reflecting on owns actions so that a continuous learning will take place. This means that as per
this concept a self-reflection is being made in order to develop better awareness, knowledge and
understanding along with skills and competencies of ourselves. This will enable an individual to
be prepared for future course of action. Likewise, it would be right to said that it involves self-
assessment and analysation of own strength and weakness which will lead to further
development of an individual.
However contrary to this Stephenson, Cronin and Whitehead (2020) argues that reflective
practice undoubtedly raise individual standard but at the same time an understanding regarding
the reflective learning among certain personnel is difficult to raised. Also in order to make
reflective learning or practice there is a high requirement of time. In addition, of this reflective
practice is not well implemented in order to deal with clinical problems.
Poorchangizi and et.al., (2019) also elucidates that the involvement and consideration of
professional codes will lead to have better efficiency with respect to clinical supervision. This
means that an inculcation of the compliance and consideration of professional codes with respect
to medical practitioners and health professionals would enable them to better serve the clients.
Since, professional codes are designed and made only after detailed analysis of different
situation. Also in case of mental healthcare wherein client's mental health is involved and in such
situation a consideration towards such standards will lead to have better serving of client.

Sales and et.al., (2018) also states that in case of implementing clinical supervision,
concerned professional may need to be focussed and complied relevant standards with regard to
clinical supervision. These may lead to better delivery of services and improvised client
satisfaction. An adherence of concerned standards including ethical or confidential or various
other will directly impact the efficiency of service.
Pollock,9 and et.al., (2017) further argues that clinical supervision and compliance of
concerned standards will not be applicable in dealing with all the case of medical field. This
means that there is no universal applicability of this supervision. Being a direct interaction with
human being and mental health treating every individual with same standards and supervision
would not be able to evolve desired and efficient result.
Bifarin and Stonehouse, (2017) annotates that the clinical supervision in case of mental
health is one of the essential aspect. This is because as clinical supervision involves the training,
compliance and following of provisions set by supervisors which will lead to have better
rendering of professional service and as a result better care and attention with regard to client and
its mental health will be enabled.
However, on a critical note Snowdon, Leggat and Taylor, (2017) states that although best
services can be availed by clinical supervision but as it involves the concept of time and directive
control which may sometime lead to non-delivery of its efficiency. In such case, supervisee feel
that they are being controlled and as a result of that they would be not be able to deliver their
best.
Clinical supervision model
With reference to mental health an adaptability of treatment based supervision model
along with integrated model will be well executed. The reason behind adoption of these model is
to ensure better serving of client. As the treatment based supervision model includes the use of
motivational interviewing or cognitive behavioural theories which will lead to have better
dealing with clients related with mental health. Also, when integrated model will be
implemented then this will lead to have a development of both skills and competencies of
supervisor. This will make it well proficient while delivering its services and dealing with mental
care of client. Thus, these models will raise the standard of services with respect to client
dealing.

In addition, of this it is to be noted that treatment based model is specialized model with
respect to mental health and issues so an adoption of this model will itself justify the choosing.
Being a model that involves counselling and psychodynamic psychotherapy it would be
easy for supervisee to carefully deal with the clients with the adoption of this model (Tian,
2021). Likewise, an implementation of integrated model will also enable a supervisee to be well
skilled and adaptive that it can better treat the client along with improving and monitoring mental
health. Thus, clinical supervision along with the implementation of these models will lead to
have raised in efficiency and performance of the concept.
Selection of clinical supervisor
The clinical supervisor must be a consultant so that better service can be availed. As this
clinical supervision is having a relation with respect to mental health so an involvement of
consultant as supervisor will enable to have better understanding of issue and concerned
situation. Being acted as counsellor a supervisor can better handle the client along with raising
efficiency with respect to supervisee.
Principles of effective supervision
Raise staff retention and morale:
With effective clinical supervision, retention of staff and morale would be easy to raise.
Direct observation:
This is also an effective principle because it will lead to have a development of skills,
monitoring performance of counsellor along with ensuring quality care.
Ongoing supervision:
This is also an important principle because it ensures that the continuous development
and improvement of the supervisee will take place (Clinical Supervision and Professional
Development of the Substance Abuse Counselor, 2020).
Cultural competence:
This is also an important principle because a supervisor need always be cultural
competent. As it need to deal with people of various cultural diversity so it is important that it
must be competent with respect to cultural diversity.
Clinical supervision barriers:

With respect to clinical supervision there is also an existence of certain barrier that may
include communication, organizational, confidentiality and various other barriers. These
concepts may act as barrier and work as hindrance in the path of delivering best services by
clinical personnel.
Overcoming barriers:
As adaptability of clinical principles and its implementation will lead to have overcoming
the barriers. This means a clear communication of the clinical principles in well-understandable
language will lead to have overcoming of the barrier along with benefiting the patient or the staff
and the organization too.
Evaluation of clinical supervision
It refers to a process that will enable the supervisor to have a check regarding the success
of its supervision. There are various ways by which clinical supervision will be evaluated.
Allowing feedback with regard to supervisee and its experience, making self-assessment or
reflective practice will also need to be used for evaluating supervision. Setting up of standards
and goals in terms of client experience will also be taken into consideration form evaluation.
This means that measurement of advocacy of services against the set standards and the goals will
be taken into consideration for evaluating the clinical supervision. Measurement of actual
outcome in terms of development of skills and professionalism will also be used for evaluating
the clinical supervision. An adoption of the practice of process notes, group supervision will also
be used for evaluating the clinical supervision.
In other words evaluating the clinical supervision with respect to client satisfaction or
against the goals including skill and professional development will be a good standard that will
deliver better evaluation. This process will also enable the supervisor to find and detect deviation
in its supervision so that better actions with respect to improvement will be taken. Thus, it will
not only lead to have performance measurement but it will further involve taking of corrective
action so that existing clinical supervision will be improvised.
Ethical consideration
With respect to clinical supervision there is also an association of ethical issues. As this is
having a direct relation with patient health and well-being which relate it with the issue of

confidentiality because the private and confidential information of the patient is stored with the
healthcare unit. Likewise, some other issues may also related with the dual relationship,
informed consent and various other aspect. These issues need to be resolved and mitigated by
healthcare units and personnels so that confidence and satisfaction with respect to patient
towards the healthcare will be maintained. This will also lead to have better services of the
healthcare (Morrissey, 2020). A carefully designing of supervision plan and its implementation
will lead to have better monitoring and solving the issue of the ethical consideration. With the
implication of supervision plan the supervisor would be able to monitor and control the
compliance of ethical issues and consideration within the healthcare unit.
