This essay discusses mental illness as a health issue, its theoretical perspective, ethical and legal framework, and recommendations for addressing it. Mental illness refers to behavioural problems that impede the mental health of an individual and are often relapsing and persistent. The recovery model of mental illness argues that recovery from mental disorders is possible and requires optimisation and commitment from people suffering from mental illness, mental health professionals, their family members, social services, public health teams, and the wider community. Ethical challenges arise in connection with the selection of treatments and involuntary treatment for mental disorders. The Ontario Mental Health Act and the Mental Health Act of British Columbia regulate the administration of services that focus on mental disorders. The essay concludes with recommendations for addressing mental illness as a health issue.
