MET230L: Hydraulics and Pneumatics Lab
Unit 1 Lab Assignment 2
Exercise 1
In this exercise, we will conveniently use a 5/2 (five port, two
position), spring return, manually operated, permanent directional
control valve (DCV) to control a double acting cylinder.
a. Predict what happens to the cylinder C1 when the
compressor is turned on and the valve M1 is
Unactuated
Piston rod in the cylinder remains in its initial position
Actuated
Piston rod in the cylinder will extend.
b. In the simulation software assigned by your instructor, open
a new file named Unit1_Lab2Ex1_LastName_FirstName
c. Build the circuit using the components shown or their
equivalents
d. Start the simulation by left clicking the start button circled
in red as shown ( ).
e. Left click once on the valve M1
What happens to the cylinder? The piston rod in the cylinder extended.
Is this the result predicted in step a.? __Yes
f. Left click again on the valve M1
What happens to the cylinder? _The piston rod in the cylinder retracted to its
initial position.
Is this the result predicted in step a.? _Yes_
g. Consider the FCV (Flow Control Valve) V1 and V2,
Which one controls the cylinder extension speed? _V1__
Why? _This is because when the 5/2way valve is actuated it allows the
compressed air to flow into the cylinder.
Set its opening to 10% and run the circuit. Does the extending speed of the cylinder
decreases as predicted? Yes, it decreased as per the prediction.
h. In exercise 6 of the previous Lab, we adapted the 5/2 DCV to control a single acting cylinder
Can we also adapt a 3/2 DCV to control a double acting cylinder? No
Why? It has a single output port for connecting the cylinder; therefore it will
require the cylinder to have its own retracting mechanism.

Exercise 2
Consider the pneumatic circuit shown.
a. Give the complete descriptive name the following components:
M1: 3/2-way valve mechanically operated.
P1: _5/2-way valve, pneumatically operated
________________________________________________________________
b. Explain what happens when M1 is actuated while the compressor is on
The piston rod is extended to the right. When M1 is actuated air flow to the
pneumatic port of P1hence actuating P1, therefore allowing air to flow into the
cylinder through port 1 and 4 of P1 via the one- way valve V1.
c. In the simulation software assigned by your instructor, open a new file named
Unit1_Lab2Ex2_LastName_FirstName
d. Build the circuit using the components shown or their equivalents
e. Start the simulation by left clicking the start button circled in red as shown ( )
f. What happens to the cylinder piston/rod? _The piston rod of the cylinder retains its initial
position.
g. Now, left click on M1. What happens to the cylinder rod? _The piston rod of the cylinder
extends to the right.
h. Left click again on M1. What happens to the cylinder rod? _The piston rod of the cylinder
retracts to its initial position.
