Mid-Term Assignment
Exercise 1
Consider the figure shown.
Figure for Exercise 1
a. Give the complete name of the component D2. Quick exhaust valve
b. In the simulation software assigned by your instructor, open a new file named
MidTermEx1_LastName_FirstName
c. Build the circuit using the components shown or their equivalents
d. Start the simulation by left clicking the start button circled here in red as shown ( ).
e. Left click once on valve M1
What happens to the cylinder? Piston retains its initial position
f. Left click once on valve M2
What happens to the cylinder? _ Piston rod extends_
g. Set the opening of the flow control valve F1 to 30%
h. Left click on the appropriate valve to extend the cylinder piston and observe the speed
i. Left click on the appropriate valve to retract the cylinder piston and observe the speed
j. Which of the extension of retraction stroke is faster? _ Extension is faster_
Why? This is because of the quick exhaust valve which expels the air in behind
the cylinder piston rod rapidly during extension hence faster extension.
k. Take a screen shot of the working simulated circuit, copy and paste in the word document

a. In the simulation software assigned by your instructor, open the
MidTermEx1_LastName_FirstName file you created in exercise 1
b. Rename and save the file thus opened as MidTermEx2_LastName_FirstName
c. Without adding any new component, modify the circuit such that the return stroke is
faster than the forward (extension) stroke
d. Start the simulation by left clicking the start button circled here in red as shown ( ).
e. Set the opening of the flow control valve F1 to 30%
f. Left click on the appropriate valve to extend the cylinder piston/rod and observe the
speed
g. Left click on the appropriate valve to retract the cylinder piston/rod and observe the speed
h. Is the return stroke faster than the forward one as required? _yes_
i. Take a screen shot of the working simulated circuit, copy and paste in the word
document.
j. Save the simulation and word files.
