1ASTHMA MEDICATION
Asthma is implied as a highly debilitating health condition associated with chronic
disease of the airway of lungs. The CDC reported that, in US asthma is prevalent among the
children and almost one out of twelve individuals is affected by the disease. In the treatment of
asthma, corticosteroids are one of the most effective medications (Fuhlbrigge & Kelly, 2014).
A systematic meta-analysis research conducted by Loke et al. (2015), observed the
effectiveness of corticosteroids among the children affected with the chronic disease, asthma.
Researchers showed in their study that long term use of corticosteroids can resist the velocity of
growth of the children. In that study, researchers performed observational studies and RCT. In
addition, random effects meta-analysis of the mean differences in thefinal height or growth
velocity (cm/year) was performed between the subject population groups. 3 observational studies
and 20 RCT studies were executed during this study and inverse variance method was used to
measure the mean differences in growth velocity per year (cm/year) of the children who were
corticosteroids non-user and user. Finally it was observed that, the one observational and 16 RCT
studies reported significant different result regarding children’s growth velocity suffering from
asthma. The overall study showed the result that, corticosteroids did not have same growth rate
with the non-users of corticosteroids. In this RCT, the pooled mean different was reported as -
0.48cm/ year after using the drug for 1 year. The other 2 observational studies reported that use
of corticosteroids reduced the adult final height by almost 0.7-0.9 cm. by the observations of the
two meta-analysis reported mean differences of -0.85cm with a confidence interval of 95%. The
author hence concluded that, the corticosteroids resist the growth velocity of the children.
The findings of Fuhlbrigge& Kelly (2014) also provided support to the study results of
Loke et al. ( 2015). In this study, it was found that corticosteroid’s effect is dependent on the
duration and the dose of the drug. After 1-2 years of treatment initiation, the growth reduction
