Visit to the Metropolitan museum of art
I set a visit to the Metropolitan museum of Art situated at the New York City, on April
2018. The museum houses about 5000 years of art and architecture and is a treasury of rare and
beautiful objects. The art gets its life in the Museum galleries by revealing the unexpected
linkage across time and across different cultures. It was mesmerizing to see the first object of the
Museum, which was a Roman Sarcophagus. Other European paintings including the works of
Anthony van Dyke, Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
I found it hard to believe that the paintings in the gallery were true paintings done by the
stroke of brush by the real masters. I have learnt about the Russian Ruskinian Gothic sculptures
sculpted by the Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould. The Museum has enriched its collection
throughout the 19 th century and I supposedly treated my eyes with the beautiful Cesnolla
collection of the Cypriot arts. It was surprising that these arts dated from Bronze Age to roman
era. All these had helped to establish the reputation of Metropolitan museum as a major fountain
of the classical antiquities.
The compartmentalization and the layout of the Scaife gallery was vivid but at the same
time making it convenient for the visitors to maneuver through the other sections of the gallery. I
was surprised to find that the unofficial mascot of the Museum "William", which is an ancient
hippopotamus statuette entered the collection of the museum in the year 1917. The museum
contained the largest collection of the Egyptian objects after Cairo. The other notable collections
of this Museum are the arms and the armor, the arts of Africa, the ancient art of the near eastern,
the Greek and the roman art, magnificent European sculptures and decorative designs,
photographs, musical instruments and Robert Lehman collection.
