Micro-plastics are minute plastic
pieces less than 5 mm in length that
can be detrimental to our oceanic
and marine life.
In this poster, environmental
pollution instigating from micro-
plastics has been done with the
following objectives:
To summarize their sources
To discuss their distribution
To discuss their ecological impacts

It is estimated that there could be around 7000-
35000 tons of plastic floating in the ocean .These
pollutants, once in the water, are transported
around the word by oceanic waves where they
persist and mount up. Micro-plastics are suspended
in the surface waters, coastal waters, estuaries,
water columns, beaches, rivers, as well as deep-
sea sediments.
Micro-plastic debris suspending on the world’s ocean
has a huge ecological impact. For example they:
Lead to sub-lethal or mortality of animals and plants
through entanglements
Alter benthic community structure
Emit dangerous chemicals which pollute the
ecological cycle
Facilitate the incursion of alien species
Micro-plastics have adverse effects on the entire
marine life. They also pose danger to the entire
ecological process because they lead to acid rain
Micro-plastics enter the ecosystem thorough various
sources such as:
Industrial processes
Fishing nets
Plastic bags
Soda bottles
Cosmetics
Other sources of primary and secondary micro-plastics
include dust/product emission during wear and tear.
The above sources are just the main ones but there is a
wide array of processes which act as sources of these
pollutants.
Despite the increased scientific interest in expanding
the knowledge base on microplastics, many
questions still remain unanswered. Their distribution
is massive and their effects on the ecology,
economy, and society cannot be underestimated. A
lot still needs to be done to reduce their spread in the
world’s ocean.
An intensive literature review has been conducted
to achieve a number of objectives such as:
Summarize the nomenclature, properties, and
sources of micro plastics.
Evaluate methods through which these
substances are distributed in the ocean
Assess their environmental impact.
Literature review will be based on currently
published materials addressing the issue of micro-
plastics.
