MILK POWDER MANUFACTURING2 Introduction Milk powder is produced from the regular milk of animals such as cows, goats, camels and even sheep. It generated as a result of heating the milk in high temperatures until it evaporates. Ordinary milk is usually converted to milk powder to make it long lasting and to also reduce the bulk of the milk("Milk powder manufacture handbook," 2018). The volume of the fluid is usually supposed to be cut to reduce its costs of having to preserve the milk. Milk powder is also essential since it can be converted to a variety of uses such as using it in making sweets, making candy, chocolate industry and even by the United Nations. The United Nations transports the milk powder to countries which are faced by calamities so that it can serve them on a long- term basis. Milk Powder Production. Milk powder production is so crucial in the local markets due to the advantages that it comes with. For the process of producing milk powder to take place, several factors must be considered. The requirements should enable that all the consumers get the final products. This is in a way of attempting to make profits. Factors to decide for manufacturing location. Closeness to customers- the manufacturing plant should be located in a place where it is near to the consumers. The need for consumers is essential due to the fact milk powder has a variety of uses. Closeness to customers will ensure that the milk reaches the market at the most convenient time("Chapter 7, Head 1", 2018). The industry should always be centrally located in the urban areas since milk

Thus the industry should always be located in areas that are served with proper working roads to ensure that the milk is supplied at the most appropriate time(Lee & Hwang, 2016). In case milk is not provided at the most appropriate time it will always expire. Thus closeness to suppliers is so important to reduce the cases of expired milk. Closeness to labor suppliers-availability of labor is very important before establishing a milk powder manufacturing plant. The milk powder producing industries should not be hidden in more rural areas since in rural areas there is not enough skilled workforce to operate machines(Redding, Sturm & Wolf, 2007). The industry should always be located in urban areas where there is a variety of specialized workforce. Government regulations- the company, should always be located in areas that have reasonable government regulations. The proper government regulations include the rules of taxation. In markets where the government provides incentives to the companies, the milk powder company should always seek a location there to take advantage of that. The company should also act against the government requirements to avoid closure. Product layout The production industry should adopt a fixed position layout. The fixed position layout will enable the company to conserve in its space so that cleaning and repair of

The milk powder industry comprises of mass production of the milk powder("Amul Plant Layout | Butter | Milk," 2018). The mass production too helps in reducing the cost associated with producing the commodity. The process also comprises of the division of labor since different people are needed in various departments. The milk production process is composed of a variety of departments including; Milk receiving department Manufacturing department Storage point Packaging section. These departments usually help the process to move on smoothly thus increasing on specialization. Specialization, in this case, will enable the experts to be dominant in their departments thus increasing the production of milk powder. The production of milk powder has various advantages and disadvantages. The benefits of the production layout include; a)Reduced material handling cost- the creation of milk powder has a reduced material handling cost since the process does not involve a lot of operations. It only consists in vaporizing the milk which is a direct process.

The reduction in the operations makes it cost effective(Sarina, 2012). The less floor area also make it easier to clean. Since all the manufacturing layouts have both advantages and disadvantages, the milk powder manufacturing industry layout has its drawbacks. The problems of the design include; a)A breakdown at one point affects the entire process- the manufacturing process is a continuous and a repetitive process thus the collapse at one end will bring a stop to the whole production process. b)It reduces on creativity- the milk powder production process is a more direct process having minimal procedures. The fewer methods make creativity to be absent since the usual systems are to be followed. This can tend to cause boredom in the manufacturing industry. Conclusion The production of milk powder is a simple and more direct process. Its simplicity implies that the output is more cost friendly. A cost friendly production process is usually of an advantage as it enables the industries to produce more thus making more profits as a result of the
