Introduction
Milton Model of Language was introduced by Milton Erickson. He induced unconscious
resources for some alteration so that problems related to that task can be solved out. If it is used
then it can help in attaining solutions by communicating with other persons (Atkinson, 2014).
There was a meeting of John Grinder and Richard Bandler with Dr Milton Erickson who was
well known for modern hypnosis so that he can discover the reason of his own success. After
examining approaches and methods of Erickson, they invented Milton Model. It was just
introduced to bring a communication and change in individual. Meta Model is just opposite to
this model. This model follows the thesis of working mode of mind which works in a natural
way. It helps in maintaining 'trance' so that personality can be improved in more better way and
all resources that are hidden shall get motivated in right direction. Here the structure is explained
in different patterns and its causes and effects are also explained. It explains that the behaviour of
a person which says there is always a positive intention hidden behind it. It has a set pattern
which describes pacing and leading, motivating hidden resources and distracting the alert mind.
Body Part 1 : Pacing And Leading, Language Pattern in a Hypnotic Pattern
The Milton Model is a form of using different languages so that hidden personality traits
of an individual can be discovered. There is a complete cooperation between therapist and client
and the client keeps on conversing his existing condition with him. His responses let therapist
know the next step to be taken (Carter and McCarthy, 2014). Milton was a renowned
hypnotherapist of its time. He helped his clients to address their problems with 'trance' and make
useful use of resources available to them.
He was having ability to set up affinity with his clients and go through sensory vision. He
introduced some NLP assumptions and skills for his clients. According to him, hypnosis was best
option for a person provided under the circumstances they are in. Erickson consider client's
experience as its pace and then lead them in trance.
Pacing And Leading :
Client's pacing can be initiated by depicting and matching his/her voice tone, physiology,
choice of words etc. Then a reference is made what he/she wants to think naturally like she/he
wants to hear, feel, or think. Pacing is done by speaking in a soft tone to client's breathe (Erhard,
Jensen and Zaffron, 2016). Then another part of the process is continued which is known as

leading or also known as 'downtime' is done by paying attention by telling that “ you can feel
relaxed when you close your whenever you wish” (Gee, 2014). The rest steps include distraction
of conscious mind and then directly addressing the unconscious mind so that hidden resources
can be approached.
Hypnotic Language Pattern :
Then comes the Hypnotic Language Pattern which motivates the listener to more high
level of thinking and go more deeper states of mind. There are some states through which
relaxation of body is done or a trance state. While some other states are there through which his
present behaviour can be noticed and it's model of the world can be loosen up. More
interpretation are possible in these state with listeners. These states are somewhat similar to Meta
Model (Inacio, Wittmann, Battistella 2017). In Meta Model specific questions are being asked to
clients and they are indefinite. While Milton Model uses similar language pattern and the clients
are forced to vague conditions so that they can easily go to trance level. Thus, these patterns are
similar to Meta Model. There are some suggested actions which can be used to address
unconscious mind of the listener :
Mind Reading : Mind reading is a type of claim in which another's feelings and thoughts are
addressed without his/her concern. It is a part of Milton Model. This process is done without
specifying the way that how a therapist came into the knowledge of his/her concerned thoughts.
Lost Performative : The value of the judgements are expressed in an unidentified manner. The
listener is not aware of the judgements (Mayfield, Mayfield and Sharbrough III, 2015).
Therapists just say this sentence “Breathing is good”. By denoting this sentence they express
significant value of their judgements but the specific person is lost in his performance.
Causes & Effect : It says that one thing always ahead of another or becomes the cause of it.
There is series of cause & effect and a flow in a period of time. It adds the words like “ the,
Because, then you, if, then”. These all words explains the sequence of causes which are
responsible for effect of them with a continuous flow of time.
Complex Equivalence : There is a state when attributes is meant something which sometimes
lead to a cause or may not lead to a cause (Milton, 2017). This state says that the change is
acceptable by the listener or it can be neglected also.
Model Operator : Words that denote requirement , possibility or indicate internal position of
intensity knotted to our rules and regulations in life.

Nominalization : Nouns that are used for shorthand processes.
Verb that are unspecified : it describes action without its complete description.
Tag question : It is tagged to soften resistance at the end of any question or statement. Complete
structure can be seen in that question and tonality of statement is also visible.
There are other patterns discussed below which shows a listener can be approached by a therapist
in different states of an unconscious mind.
Body Part 2 : Causes & Effect And Language pattern :
Milton was very capable of getting desirable results from his clients by the use of
hypnosis. He noticed through hypnosis clients can easily convey their suggestions and are more
ad missive as their minds are relaxed. He was capable of transferring his words to their
unconscious mind when their mind is in trance and then speak to them in a soft tone. As he knew
that all learning and knowledge transferring is there when a person's mind is in relaxation mode.
During hypnosis when client used to meet him, he was unaware of the fact that he is in a trance
condition, but they felt something good from inside. Even, Bandler and John decided that same
language could be used with their clients too. Therefore the this same pattern was used by them
which was known as Milton Model (Myles and Mitchell, 2014). The Pattern cause and Effect
was applied where one thing occurred due to another. In this statement, both the things are
following each other. If another situation occurs there would always be a cause of that
occurrence. For example in sentence ' I am here Because of You'. Here you is a cause and
therefore because brought Cause and Effect. It is implied to be a genuine sentence. Just because
cause is implied to outcomes that's why this sentence generates trance. Below given are some
more language patterns :
Universal Quantifier : It denotes to a general ground that's always genuine or never genuine. It
has a strong theorization which uses the words like everyone, nobody, never and always.
Unspecified Verb : It never explains the complete meaning of a verb.
Comparative Deletion : Here one thing is compared to another and then verbal deletion is made.
Nothing specific is mentioned for anybody like whom or what is deleted (Pennycook, 2017).
Pace current experience : Here situation is only mentioned what is happening presenting.
Therapist cannot guess or say the complete situation. Pacing statements helps therapists to
lubricate the track properly which is a different form of turning conversation down path of
minimum resistance.

5
Double Bind : in this pattern, illusions of more than one choice are. These choices have more
possibilities which leads to same results. These possibilities are commonly seen in sales
situation. It can be cleared from an example ' Do you want to pay with credit card or through
cash'? So in this sentences two choices are made by the sales executive to the customer. The
result will be the same from credit card or from cash (Brinton, Donna and Susan Bauckus, eds).
Embedded Commands : It is a verbal pattern or command which works on unconscious mind.
The idea is fed in that type of mind but its not one time work (Vercellotti, 2017). Most of the
clients get confused with one command. Embedded command cab be used in series to get strong
results. It is pattern kind of thing for unconscious mind. A shift is being detected after reaching
into a trance and then the client is relaxed when he/she hears the voice of therapist.
Conversational Postulate : These commands tell clients to perform their actions. Whatever they
are asked to do in an unconscious mind, their answer is 'yes'. When the client answer 'yes'
automatically his/her task gets completed.
Therefore, to filter individual's experience language is a powerful source of secondary
representation and words are simply substitutions that are used to express inner feelings and
expressions like what a person hears, sees, tastes ans smells. This process goes with unconscious
mind. Everything is expressed in a linguistic form as words considered are highly powerful.
Language cannot stop anybody's emotions or thoughts but the words may become inadequate to
convey individual's thoughts. When a person speak during unconsciousness, generalisations,
distortions and deletions occur frequently (Fairclough, 2014). If these are misunderstood then
problems may arise. Words delivered may not be clear both from the side of sender and receiver
and have their own range of understanding. NLP can be explained as science study in which
thoughts are effected through excellent communication. Milton Erickson believed in helping
others sometimes by conscious awareness and directly by executing the relaxed mind through his
communication skills. His communication pattern involves story telling, trance, hypnotherapy,
complete language pattern, embedded commands so that individual's life can be facilitated and
can be become more meaningful, empowered, changing and solution based. These changes can
be made only on unconscious level as conscious level is always ready of the present situation.

CONCLUSION :
Finally it is concluded that Milton's Model is used to solve problems and difficulties of
any individual by utilising its available resources. He believed that Language is the best form of
communication (Lopez, May Jr and Dorafshar, 2015). He was famous hypnotherapist and used
to structure sentences with trance. He was able to read non-verbal behaviour of clients and and
respected other person's model of the world. This model is invented from his observations. There
are words which have different meanings but they all sound the same. There is a situation of
amnesia, hallucination and time distortion.
