Qualitative and quantitative methods
In the research, theoretical foundations of the qualitative and quantitative research
methods are far different from each other. Different researchers have presented various views for
both methods that include qualitative and quantitative methods. These methods should be used in
the research for conducting the study to enhance the reliability and validity. In the literature, it
has been determined that mixed method of the research methodologies is applied in the field of
nursing to attain benefit of depth and breadth that is required for understanding the phenomena
of nursing. It allows the researcher with scope to compare the qualitative and quantitative data
related to the research problem of nursing (Doorenbos, 2014). The use of the mixed method
allows individuals to naturally contribute in collecting the information by integrating the data
related to quantitative and qualitative. This shows that mixed method is beneficial for nursing
research to collect comprehensive data.
In literature, it has been witnessed that mixed-method allows the researcher to get
methodological flexibility which shows that there is higher flexibility that is adaptable to the
major study design which consists of observational studies as well as randomized trails that
contribute to clarify more statistics that can be attained only in quantitative research (Patten &
Newhart, 2017). The use of different research designs helps the researcher to get viable and
reliable data. In contrast to the above opinion, Ingham-Broomfield, (2016) study suggests that
use of the mixed research design in the nursing leads to the issue of the complexity at the time of
the evaluation of the results. There is a proper need for planning, timing, and integrating the data
for the research.
