Values, beliefs and norms fall under the broader definition of Culture and it is a
means of communication. Culture depict diverse concepts and ideas and, in an organization, a
strong corporate culture defines its success (McGregor and Doshi, 2015). It can also be said
that culture within an organization reveals the values of a firm, its attitude and its taste of the
workplace. The culture of Starbucks is such that they choose to value their employees
through monetary benefits in order to keep them motivated and contribute to their success.
Their efficient work culture and employee friendly policies of Starbucks has led them to be
the 64th most established brand in a global scale.
A part of the reason of Starbucks’ success is because of the employee friendly policies
and their generosity in the monetary incentives. It has made the employees of this firm as an
important asset for the organization itself. Since Starbucks view their employees as a
competitive advantage, they are able to maintain an accurate human resource (Tikson, 2018).
However, critics have stated that this kind of motivation is gradually lowering the turnover
rate of the employees and as per the Motivation need theory of Maslow, it is important that an
organization takes care of their employees’ social and psychological needs. If this theory is to
be considered then it would be beneficial for Starbucks to apply some policies that would
cover the social and psychological care of its employees to maintain its establishment as a
brand as well as have a consistent turnover rate of the employees.
