Multiculturalism is a condition in which all the miscellaneous racial or cultural groups in
a society have equivalent opportunities and rights. Nobody is ignored or viewed as irrelevant.
This enhances agreement in the society and individuals are intelligent to live in peace and work
together to achieve common goal without struggles based on their variances in race and culture.
The current status of multiculturalism in Canada states that Canada has one of the largest
immigration rate among the nations in the world. This is brought about by the reuniting of the
family members and the economic policy put in place. Canada also currently has the highest
number of refugees when compared to other nations in the world (Berry, 2013).
There are some of the strengths of multiculturalism’s project in Canada and the
improvements that should be made to better the condition. Under the strengths of
multiculturalism, we find out that multiculturalism nurtures national individuality, endorses
cultural open-mindedness and the transformation of the lives of the citizens in Canada. Another
area of strength in the project is that Canada is secured by the nearest oceans and has a
neighboring country that is friendly. Canada gains some of the material benefits from the
European heritage which has provided the country with parliamentary structure and has
established the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In addition to this, there is the
Canadians’ outlook and respect for one another for the substance of the diversity of the two
cultures (Cameron & Stein, 2007).
Despite the strengths of the multiculturalism project, Canada needs support and
improvement for the purposes of advancing the condition. One way is taking some of the visitors
from other countries who are interested to contribute their talents to Canadian unity and
commonality. The employment of these newcomers with different priorities and goals should be
done through the immigration policies and the laws governing such act. Another improvement

that should be done is that, the Canadian immigration measures and strategies should safeguard
the compatibility of the purposes of the new comers with Canadian constitution (Kymlicka,
2008).
In conclusion, the diversity is not the main strength of Canada, it is the unity that is
copied through reverence and conciliation among the Canadians in vindictiveness of diversity.
