Guidelines for Critical Analysis of an Article
You completed your article summaries in Module 3. The next step is to complete a critical analysis
of each article. For each article, ask yourself these questions when completing this section of your
Information Retrieval Paper.
What were the strengths of the research? Were a significant number of participants
studied in an appropriate setting that can be applied in a broader sense?
What were the limitations of the research? Was the environment controlled?
What did the author leave out?
Were barriers identified and addressed?
Could the findings be implemented with purpose and expected outcomes?
Article 1
In the space below, post the reference for the first article in correct APA format. If you made errors
in formatting your reference for this article in Module 3, now is the time to make the appropriate
changes so you do not make the same formatting error over and over.
Murni, I. K., Duke, T., Kinney, S., Daley, A. J., & Soenarto, Y. (2015). Reducing hospital-acquired
infections and improving the rational use of antibiotics in a developing country: an effectiveness
study. Archives of disease in childhood, 100(5), 454-459.
In the space below, write a one-paragraph critique of your first research article. Apply correct APA
format and scholarly writing style as you critique the article’s strengths and limitations related to
your stated research question.
One of the strengths of the article is the choice of the setting of the study, whereby the
hospital serves a large population of about 2.4 million. The hospital's ward provides services to both
infectious and non-infectious diseases. Besides, the study used a large sample size of 1020 patients
for each period. The third possible strength of the article is the study design which consisted of
three periods of the prospective before and after the research. The chosen 12 months period between
pre-intervention baseline, the intervention, and the post-intervention was sufficient for the outcome
of the study as it reduces any impact of seasonal disparity of HAIs (Brocket & Shaban, 2015). Also,
JBoyd 2017 Page 2 of 4
Document Page
N3345 Transition to Professional Nursing
the evaluation of the participants was effective as the clients who were listed during the three
months of intervention were involved in the post-intervention analysis.
Some of the limitations of the article are the choice of study settings which was restricted to
one location or region. The study was restricted to only Dr. Sardjito Hospital in Indonesia, which
can affect the outcome of the results as the findings cannot be generalized to the whole population
of India. The other limitation of the study article is the omission of data analysis that could address
the ascertainment bias of before and after the study. The authors of the article have identified
possible bias and addressed some using various data analysis and techniques. For example, the
authors have addressed possible bias were similar characteristics of participants were expected to
have similar intrinsic infection risks in both pre preintervention and postintervention periods. Also,
the findings of the research article could be implemented with the use of WHO antibiotic guidelines
and with the utilization of wider strategies to reduce the transmission of microbes and HAIs
antibiotic resistance.
Article 2
In the space below, post the reference for the second article in correct APA format. . If you made
errors in formatting your reference for this article in Module 3, now is the time to make the
appropriate changes so you do not make the same formatting error over and over.
Ramasethu, J. (2017). Prevention and treatment of neonatal nosocomial infections. Maternal health,
neonatology and perinatology, 3(1), 5.
In the space below, write a one-paragraph critique of your second research article. Apply correct
APA format and scholarly writing style as you critique the article’s strengths and limitations related
to your stated research question.
The strength of the article is that it has provided much literature review that backs can be
used to back up the findings of the study (Ramasethu, 2017). Besides its use of several literature
reviews, the article has various limitations. One of the limitations of the article is the failure to
JBoyd 2017 Page 3 of 4
Document Page
N3345 Transition to Professional Nursing
include methodologies used in the study. Failure to provide a clear and precise description of how
the experiment was done, and the rationale used remains a weakness of the article since the reader
cannot judge the validity of the research article. A good article should include the methodology
used as it provides a description of the techniques used, how was it used, and how data was
collected and gathered for analysis. The authors of the article have not provided information on how
they retrieved the information from the literature review (Ramasethu, 2017).
Another limitation of the paper is the failure to include the introduction of the main theme,
which, in this case, is on the prevention and treatment of neonatal nosocomial disorders. The
introduction is crucial in an article as it helps the reader understand the research problem within the
topic in their own position. The omission of introduction indicates that the authors of the article had
no clear idea of what was their purpose. The third limitation is the failure to show some analysis and
discussion about the findings of the article. The analysis part in a research paper helps to prove the
hypothesis, thereby arriving at the conclusions. The authors of the article have not included the
analysis part; thus, weakness as the reader cannot inspect the data to arrive at a conclusion.
Discussion part in a research paper is crucial as it interprets and provides more important
information on the significance of the findings of the article (Kumar, 2019).
Article 3
In the space below, post the reference for the third article in correct APA format. . If you made
errors in formatting your reference for this article in Module 3, now is the time to make the
appropriate changes so you do not make the same formatting error over and over.

In the space below, write a one-paragraph critique of your third research article. Apply correct APA
format and scholarly writing style as you critique the article’s strengths and limitations related to
your stated research question
One of the strengths of the article is that it has highlighted the research questions of the
study. Research question remains as the first step that provides the reader with the focus of the
whole research. The research question presented by the article acts as the catalysts for the research
study and introduces the reader with the ideas or hypothesis that is defined in the context. The other
strength of the research article is the use of different locations which indicates that the results of
findings can be generalized as the setting of the study was not restricted to one region or area
(Sharma & Bhatia, 2015).
There are several limitations that are involved in the study article. One of these limitations is
that the study was conducted in the hospital lobby and the placement of an AHS dispenser in the
area non-ethical and not effective when it comes to the safety of the patient. Making use of the
dispenser may have been lower as the participants may have been planning to utilize the dispenser
in another place within the same hospital. Besides, only three days out of a week that was utilized
for observation and only a total of 3 hours were utilized in a day thus the outcome of the findings in
the research article may have been affected. Furthermore, the authors of the article have identified
possible bias and addressed some using various data analysis and techniques. Also, the findings of
the article could be implemented for future study to find out the impact of social pressure and
dynamics on visitor AHS and find out the strategies for improving visitor HH (Compton &
Davenport, 2018).

Task #1 – Conclusion: Summarize Key Points
In this part of the Information Retrieval Paper, you will synthesize the main points from the
three-peer reviewed, evidence based articles.
Directions:
In this section write a paragraph or two to synthesize the key points of the articles. Consider
this section a conclusion of your findings.
Synthesis Points from Articles (Type below)
From the findings (Murni et al., 2015), one can conclude that antibiotic stewardship
approach multifaceted infection control are effectual in enhancing the healthcare outcomes,
lowering HAIs, and reducing the in-hospital mortality. Also, as evidenced by the study, unsuitable
use of antibiotics remains an issue; thus, the need for the renewal of focus on the burden of
antibiotic resistance in health care settings (Willison-Parry et al., 2013).
Also, from the study (Ramasethu, 2017), it is important for hospital managers to ensure
hospital visitors to practice hand hygiene as this is important in preventing any healthcare-related
infections. AHS can be used as it is effective in killing microbes that are linked to infections.
Furthermore, there is the need for the implementation of strategies that can help in the prevention
and treatment of a nosocomial infection which become a complex issue in health care settings
(Hobbs et al., 2016).
Task #2 – Reference Page
In this part of the Information Retrieval Paper, you will create the reference page for the
entire paper in APA format.
