Overview: “Information Retrieval Paper - Part 1”
This Module you will begin to develop an Information Retrieval Paper. This Assignment focuses on
identifying appropriate evidence-based nursing practices related to specific problems you may
identify as you work in the healthcare/workplace setting.
The goals of an Information Retrieval Paper are to (1) practice using APA format, (2) summarize
and examine the strengths and limitations of research articles, and (3) prepare you for the Nursing
Research Course where you will write a research paper using the skills you have learned
completing this Information Retrieval Paper.
As a part of your Information Retrieval Paper, you will begin development of a research question
using PICO format. Chapter 10 of the Role Development text book explains PICO. Be sure to
develop your research question and then just below your research question delineate what the P,
I, C, and O components of your question are.
For this Module 3 Assignment you will prepare a Title Page in proper APA format for your
Information Retrieval Paper, identify three peer-reviewed articles, and summarize each article
using APA format.
It may be helpful to look at the outline for the entire paper before you begin this Module’s

Part 1: Research Problem and Question using PICO Format
A. In the space below, identify the clinical problem in the workplace setting that will
serve as the focus of your information retrieval paper. Make sure that the problem is
one that would be under your complete control as a nurse.
Clinical Problem (Type in box below)
The clinical problem which is associated with the workplace setting is the increasing rsate of
nosocomial or the hospital acquired infections. People go to hospital with the hope of getting
cured. However rather than getting cured patients mostly the children and the age people acquire
more infections (Rosenthal et al., 2016)
B. In the space below, compose a preliminary research question about the clinical
problem that you identified in the workplace. Use this criteria in composing a
preliminary research question:
- Question must relate to a clinical problem in the workplace.
- Question cannot be answered with a simple yes or no.
- The issue to be studied is under your complete control as a nurse.
- The question is open ended.
Delineate the PICO components of your question.
State your question

In this research question P (problem) = Nosocomial infection
I (intervention) = Proper hand hygiene
C (Comparator or control) = It is not always necessary to have specific comparison and here no
specific comparison has been taken.
O (outcome) = Reduction of the nosocomial infection.
C. Compose a rationale that explains why you chose the research question. (Type in

Rationale for Selecting the Research Question (Type in box below)
This research question has been selected as patients in the hospital rather than becoming cured
are acquiring many other infections. So it is very essential to maintain hygiene in the hospital and
proper hand hygiene is the most effective way of reducing the spread of infection from on patient
to another (Khan, Ahmad & Mehboob, 2015). It has been accepted throughout the Universe that
hands are the principle route through which cross infection occurs. So if hands are washed
properly the spread of infection can be reduced (Khan, Baig & Mehboob, 2017).

period after the intervention was over. The percentage of the inappropriate use of antibiotic got
reduced from 43% to 20.6%. The compliance of hand hygiene got increased from 18.9% to 62.9%.
The mortality rate of children in the hospital also got decreased from 10.4% to 8 %. According to
the result it can be concluded that the multifaceted interventions of infection control are very
effective in the reduction of the hospital acquired infection rates among the children. The
improvement in the use of antibiotics, growing amenability of hand hygiene reduces the death rate
of the hospitalized children in most of the developing countries (Murni et al., 2015).

neonatology and perinatology, 3(1), 5.
In the space below, write a summary paragraph in APA format. Use scholarly writing to describe

This experiment was conducted to determine about how to control the spread of nosocomial
infections among neonatal. According to the authors of this paper, the premature infants are
vulnerable to infections caused by microorganisms as they have to undergo several invasive
procedures. The neonates most of the times are dependent on the central catheters for the delivering
of nutrition. They have to depend on ventilators for respirations. In this experiment several methods
were applied to govern the decrease in the rate of infection control among the neonates. The
prevention of the spread of nosocomial infection requires a multidimensional approach. Hand
hygiene before and after touching patients is one of the best approaches in improving hand hygiene.
The alcohol base sanitizer is very active against microorganisms and this is also very efficient than
plain antiseptics. The neonates must also have the maternal milk as breast milk is an inexpensive
way as well as a simple measure in reducing the rates of infection. Much efforts have been given in
replicating the anti-infectious characteristics of the maternal milk by using probiotics, prebiotics

Much efforts have been given in
replicating the anti-infectious characteristics of the maternal milk by using probiotics, prebiotics
and synbiotic. The results of the efforts were successful and still many researches are going on

nosocomial infections. Since the last few decades the incidences of the catheter related infection
were reduced to a great extent as the nurses provide much care and attention in each and every step
starting from the insertion till maintenance. This experiment proved that not all of the hospital
acquired infections can be cured, like the infections caused by the ventilator acquired pneumonia
and infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. So it can be conclude among all the infection
control mechanisms proper hand sanitization is the most active one (Ramasethu, 2017).

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect on the visitors’ rate after applying alcohol
grounded hand sanitizer at the location of the entrance of the hospital. The utilization of alcohol
grounded hand sanitizers by the visitors were observed and it is also examined that location of the
alcohol base hand sanitizer and the characteristics of the visitors were influencing the use of AHS
or not. The aim of this experiment was to determine whether the usage of AHS is influenced by the

characteristics of the visitors and the location of the AHS in the hospital. The study was conducted
in three different location with AHS and the data consisted of the characteristics of the visitors. The
result of this experiment was very effective as the visitors were using 5.28 times more in one region
and in the other region it also increased to 1.38 times more than it was before. This research study
showed that adults and elder people are also much concerned about the effectiveness of hand
hygiene. The hand cleanness is the most active way of stopping the spread of nosocomial
infections. All of the workers of the hospital have to take care of so many patients so it is feasible
for them to wash their hands before and after taking care of each patients (Hobbs et al., 2016).
