Introduction
• Fast fashion can be defined as a fashion culture involving rapid
production, sale, consumption and disposal of fashion apparels (Black,
2013). The fast fashion line prices are normally lower as compared to
regular fashion lines with a model of bulk production used.
• The fast fashion culture increases the rate at which fashion trends
change hence necessitating the creation of more fashion seasons for
accommodating this increased rate in fashion trends’ change.
• This fashion culture however impacts the environment and climate
negatively. This therefore makes sustainability of the fast fashion an
issue of interest.
• The United Kingdom is Europe’s largest fashion consumer thereby
representing a significant place of focus for the study of the
sustainability of fast fashion.

The Rise of Fast Fashion
• Presently, online communities inform on social norms and societal
standards and by extension fashion. The exposure to fashion trends
from all over the world online communities raises the need for the
most recent fashion trend.
• The rise of the need for most recent fashion trends gave fashion
brands an opportunity for profit making which they have fueled by
having more frequent releases of fashion lines. The consumers on
their part purchase the most recent fashion lines and dispose of them
after the release of a new fashion line.
• Yearly purchase of clothing in the United Kingdom per individual is
estimated to be 26.7kg (Jasmine, 2019). This fast rate of release of
fashion lines and subsequent fast consumption of the lines
constitutes the culture of fast fashion.
