This paper deals with the case history of Mrs. Marjorie Burns, a 76 year old inpatient
who has been transferred to a Geriatric Management Unit (GE) after being admitted
for delirium. During hospital stay, she was diagnosed with urinary tract infection
(UTI). The main purpose of this assignment is to provide annotated bibliography for
5-8 articles of relevance to the understanding of the CaseWorld case of Mrs. Marjorie
Burns. The articles chosen for the annotated bibliography related to the case of Mrs.
Burns because these articles defines the care and treatment of UTI’s in elderly
people and it will help to determine the kind of support and interventions needed by
Mrs. Burns for her recovery. The articles taken report about treatment of UTI’s and
other emergency procedure, prevalence of UTI, factor contributing to development of
UTI and medical and personal care strategies for the treatment of UTI.
The significance of completing an annotated bibliography for nurse is that it can
develop their skills related to understanding of different research strategy, critical
appraisal of research literature and understanding the ideas of different authors
related to a research topic. An annotated bibliography activity can develop nurse
knowledge related to various issues surrounding a clinical topic, accurately review
the literature on the topic, demonstrate quality and depth of reading and develop
clinical judgment for application of research evidence in clinical practice (LoBiondo-
Wood & Haber, 2017). In the future, the knowledge and skills gained through an
annotated bibliography will help nurse to engage in evidence based practice. They
will be able to use and apply best research literature in specific clinical situation and
use them to influence patient outcome. Hence, this activity will facilitate nurse to
engage in professional development by gaining knowledge regarding critical
appraisal of research paper and using good practice in relation to evidence based
practice to improve nursing practice and achieve favourable patient outcome.
