Introduction
The following reports aims towards analyzing the Robert Wood Foundation
Committee Initiative and IOM report with a special focus on the state level performance of
Virginia. The report will aim of emphasize the role of IOM in improving the quality of the
nursing practice and patients’ health-related outcome.
Robert Wood Foundation Committee Initiative and IOM report
In order to identify optimized solution for nursing care that will address numerous
issues faced in the nursing profession while transforming the manner in which the Americans
receive the healthcare, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation (RWJF) have launched new Initiatives in the domain of Future Trends of
Nursing. As the part of this novel initiative, IOM has convened a committee of experts in
order to identify the potential for increasing the access, improving the quality while reducing
the costs of care through proper involvement of the nurse leaders along with gamut use of the
nurse care solutions. IOM is a transformational report helping to improve the overall quality
of patients’ care by reducing the cost of care and length of stay at the hospital (Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation 2009).
Four key messages that have been identified in the IOM report and its link to nursing
practice
(i) re-conceptualization of the role of the nursing professionals under professional
settings while promoting technical advancement: this goal have paved the way towards
redefining of the professional nursing standards. For example, as per the nursing professional
code of conduct, a nursing professional must work in a culturally competitive manner. These
professional codes of practice have helped to improve the concept of trans-cultural nursing

practice and at the same time, it helped to increase the retention of the international nursing
(Prosen, 2015). In technological advancement, the training of the nurses in the information
and communication technology will paved the way for triage nursing (Ebrahimi et al., 2016).
(ii) Increasing the overall strength of the nursing professionals and re-designing the
approach of the nursing education for meeting the future healthcare demands: The increase in
the strength of the nurses have helped to reduce the chances of encountering medication
errors thus helping to improve patients’ outcome and overall cost of care (Sears et al., 2016).
Education of the nursing about future healthcare demands has paved the way for
improvement in the critical thinking approach among the nurses.
(iii) Examining innovative solutions associated with the care delivery process and nursing
professionals’ education: One of the innovative solutions for the care delivery of the nurses
include application of the electronic health records (EHRs). This has helped to reduce the
chances of documentation error and remote access of the patients’ data (Hurkens et al., 2017).
(iv) Attracting the retaining the skilled nurses under multi-care settings: Several hospitals in
the US are now following transformational leadership styles along with giving rewards and
recognition in order motivate the nurses and to increase their job satisfaction. This approach
is helping to increase the retention of the nurses (Vaismoradi et al., 2016). The
multidisciplinary team support for the nurses is creating provision for critical thinking for the
nursing professionals.
State-based action coalitions
The state-based coalitions for the development of the nursing professional code of
practice are applicable in every state of US. Washington D.C carries out the work of the
Campaign at the local, state and regional levels. Advocates from communities like the

healthcare organizations, business, and academic bodies work in collaboration in order to
facilitate nursing practice. The main issues that are taken under considerations include
improved access of care, promotion of inter-professional collaboration among the healthcare
professionals, effective promotion of nursing leadership, increasing diversity in the nursing
practice, collection of the workforce data, transformation in the nursing education and
development of the healthier communities (Campaign for Action 2019). Based on the state
based collation it is possible to increase the diversity of the nursing workforce and thus
helping to increase the provision of the inter-professional collaboration. The diversity on the
nursing workforce also helps in the transformation of the nursing education while facilitating
community level practice (Snavely, 2016).
Research initiatives in Virginia
AARP, National Black Nurses Association towards promotion of Brain Health
This research initiative is based on education of the healthcare service users about
maintenance of brain health. This health awareness about brain health is aimed towards
reducing the vulnerability among the African Americans in the Virginia in developing severe
dementia. It is not a mandate that the brain educators need to be healthcare professionals
mainly the volunteers of AARP Virginia and NBNA take part in such educational health
awareness program (Campaign for Action 2018). This initiative is advancing the nursing
practice by raising the healthcare awareness among the mass. Khalsa et al. (2018) are of the
opinion that the increases in the healthcare awareness among the patients helps in active
participation in the therapy plans and helping to improve the patients’ outcome and
developing family based interventions.

SYNC: An international Leadership Program
The Virginia Action Coalition in association with the Medical Society of Virginia and
Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association is aiming to develop inter-professional
leadership programs in order to improve the effective leadership skills of the prospective
nurse leaders (Campaign for Action, 2016). Regan, Laschinger and Wong (2016) stated that
the inter-professionals leadership programs helping in improving the effective
communication skills among the nursing professionals. Effective communication skills like
the verbal or the non-verbal communication skills helps to improve the leadership qualities of
the nurses and help in effective development of the therapeutic relationships with the patients.
According to the Virginia Nurses Association (VNA) (2019), Virginia experiences a
pressing healthcare challenges like shortages of providers, increases aging population and
increased outbreak of the chronic healthcare problems. In order to address such complication,
it is the duty of the state government to come forward with proper funding in order to
increase the nurse recruitment in the healthcare sectors while promoting community level
healthcare awareness among the mass. Community level healthcare awareness help to reduce
the chances of the chronic outbreak of diseases (Virginia Nurses Association (VNA) 2019).
Conclusion
Thus from the above discussion, it can be conclude that the IOM report, "Future of
Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health helps in improving the overall nursing
professionals standards in order to improve the overall outcome of care of the patients. The
future nursing change also promotes improvement in the leadership qualities of the nursing
professionals. However, in Virginia, additional efforts must be undertaken in order to
improve the outcome of care among the older adult health management and outbreak of the
chronic diseases.
