Introduction
This essay will focus on the speciality Nephrology and will give a description of the
speciality, training required to achieve their professional standards, the roles and the
responsibilities of the specialists, the type of work that they do, the types of patients or the cases
they handle.
Thesis statement: This essay will argue on the roles of the nephrologists as primary care
providers.
Body
Nephrology can be referred to as a speciality of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis
and the treatment of Kidney or urinary tract disease, bladder problems, kidney stones, electrolyte
disorders or high blood pressure. The study of nephrology also involves the study of the
comorbid conditions that affects the kidney like diabetes and certain autoimmune disease
(Maxwell).
A physician certified in nephrology is called the nephrologists. Nephrologists require
additional skills to become specialist in certain skills like the kidney transplantation, dialysis or
chronic kidney disease or onconephrology. Nephrologists with advanced skills might have to
perform certain actions like kidney biopsy, dialysis, and treatment of the fistula and bone biopsy.
Apart from the surgical procedures, they also have to administer medications, handle blood
products, renal replacement therapy (Maxwell).
