Summary
The purpose of this report is to analyse the network requirements of Hotel
Barraquilla Plaza (HBP) and based on a questionnaire prepare a redesign of the
hotel’s network using a three layer hierarchical networking model. First the
network requirements are explained after which a questionnaire is presented
which is used to obtain information from users of the network. Then report
explains three layer hierarchical networking model and lays out the benefits.
Thereafter the present design and redesign of present network is given and
explained briefly. Then the report talks about the specific network equipment
used by the hotel’s network following which the report ends with concluding
notes.

Introduction
This report analyses the network requirements of Hotel Barraquilla Plaza
(HBP) and presents a redesign of the hotel’s network using a three layer
hierarchical networking model. The report starts by explaining the network
requirements followed by presenting a questionnaire which is used to obtain
information from users of the network. Then report explains three layer
hierarchical networking model and lays out the benefits and then provides the
design and redesign of present network while also explaining it briefly [1]. Then
the report talks about the specific network equipment used by the hotel’s
network following which the report ends with concluding notes.
Discussion
Requirements
The hotel, Barranquilla Plaza operates a two layered modular and
hierarchical network design. This includes a firewall, two routers, one switch and
a wireless access point. The devices of the network includes the workstations of
the different departments of the hotel as well as all the smartphones being used
in and around the hotel. Each of the department along with the wireless access
point is assigned a particular VLAN [7]. One of the two routers act as backup. The
other router is responsible for routing the network connectivity of the hotel. IP
addresses for the devices are configured by using the DHCP protocol.
Initially the network performance of Hotel Barranquilla Plaza was
lacklustre [4]. Wireless access to the smartphones and other portable devices
were poor and suffered from issues like connection drops, inadequate capacity
and dead zones [3]. A revised network is provided by acquiring switches and
access points from TP-Link resulting in significantly improving the wireless
network.
To further improve performance of the overall network, a redesign of the
network is required. This involves transforming the current network from a two
layered modular hierarchical network to a three layered one comprising of core
layer, distribution layer and access layers. Redundancy has to be ensured in the
core layer of the network by keeping a backup router. This is to help prevent
business operations of the hotel from getting affected in case of network failures
in the current router.
