1.0 Business profile
The aim of this project is to propose a hotel business with a serious infrastructure
environment. This report is going to cover all the network requirements to achieve a
digitalized business environment. The hotel is going to incorporate or embrace the idea of
modern technology. The hotel is proposed to be named ABC Hotel. It is going to have
various departments which will serve as workstations. The departments will be; Management,
Finance, Human resource, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Sales,
Reception and Procurement department. Each department will have its employees depending
on the job complexity in the specific department. Since the hotel is implementing modern
technology, it is going to have a number of routers and switches and desktops in every
department. Reception and sales department will be open offices since they will be
interacting directly to the customers with the sales department interacting also directly to the
other workers. A wireless router will be positioned at the reception to serve the customers
(Olups, 2010).
ABC hotel will have 7 workstations with each workstation representing a department. The
whole business will have a total of 48 employees with the CEO being at the top of the
hierarchy. The Management department will have 2 employees, 3 in the human resource, 2 in
sales, 2 in procurement, 4 in finance, 2 in reception, 3 in ICT department with the rest
offering services to customers such as security and catering. There are 18 desktops required
since each employee in various departments will be allocated 1 desktop; the other employees
will not require them in their services. The network structure will include 4 switches and 2
routers for the whole hotel. Only 1 server is required for data storage and it will be connected
to the switches through the main switch which will also connect to the 2 routers for internet
connectivity (Mills, 2011).
The following network devices will be used to design and develop the network structure that
will be implemented in the hotel.
Switches - These are the devices that will be used to extend the network to the various
sections and also outsources the network. In this network design, only 4 switches will
be required with one being a server switch and the others being server switches
(Ming, , Zhao, Xiao, & Wang, 2010).

Router - The router will be used to facilitate internet access to the users in the hotel
(Lammle, 2011).
Cables - These will be used to connect one network device to another.
RJ45 - These are connectors to the cables.
Server - This will be used for data storage and information sharing among the
various departments (Trossen & Nokia, 2009).

2.0 Network diagram
The network structure shown in the network diagram indicates that the server will be
connected to the layer 3 switch which will act as the basement switch. It is then connected to
other switches which are the department switches which in turn are connected to the
computers in each department (Peng, 2011). The server switch is then connected to the

facilitating internet connectivity will be connected to the cloud for the backup plan. The other
router which is wireless will serve the customers by providing Wi-Fi allowing them to
connect to the internet through their smartphones or laptops (Kurose & Ross, 2017). All the
network devices in the network structure will be interconnected using CAT 6 cables which
will be terminated with RJ45 at their ends.
The ICT department will be responsible for maintenance of the network structure including
the network devices and upgrading the installed software being used in the hotel to run the
business and also installing new appropriate systems and software. The network structure is
designed that it is easy to maintain and also easy to identify the source of a problem thus easy
and fast to solve (Briere, & Hurley,2011). It also allows easy flow of data where the network
cables will not be overloaded avoiding queueing improving the performance of the installed
system and therefore gaining customer satisfaction. Installing the wireless router in the
network will attract more customers to the hotel as they get free internet access and thus
increased sales and profit. Implementing the proposed network structure will ensure that the
business operates in a digital environment and promote service delivery.

A layer 3 switch acts as a switch to connect devices on the same subnet and its switching
algorithm is simple. They are also easy or quick to install, facilitates fault isolation, supports
routing between virtual Local Area Networks, enable flow accounting and high-speed

In connecting and transmitting data in local area networks such as the proposed one in this

determining the path through which the frames are to be forwarded since they work on data
link layers. To learn the MAC addresses, layer 2 switches automatically copy the MAC
address of each frame received or by listening to devices on a network while maintaining
their MAC addresses. Layer 2 switches work well in low medium traffic in VLANs but

Subject Logical and Physical Topology
The proposed business LAN has been designed using the star physical topology as indicated
in the network diagram in part two of this report. All the computers in the network are
connected to the server through the layer 2 switches which are client switches. The servers
are then connected to the layer 3 switch, the server switch which completes the connection to
the server (Minasi, 2014). This connection allows the creation of Virtual Local Area
Networks (VLANS) for each department meaning that each department under the LAN will
have its own VLAN. DHCP will be configured in the LAN to ensure that each computer that
connects to the network is automatically assigned an IP address making it easy to access
stored in the server.

The computers in the network will be connected to the switches using Ethernet cables. For
this to be achieved there must be points of connection from the switches to the computers.
Data points will be positioned at each department, which serves as a workstation. The
physical topology used is easy to install and also makes it easy for the maintenance team to
add modules in case an extension is required due to a need for expanding the business.
In star topology, it is also easy to detect faults in the network because the failure of one node
does not affect the whole network making it easy to correct or solving the faults since the
affected parts of the network are isolated (Richter, Fehske, & Fettweis, 2009). The topology
also allows the removal or change of a network device in the network without disrupting the
other devices of tampering with the data flow. Star topology offers centralized management
and this makes it easy to monitor and control the network. It also offers better performance
compared to bus topology since signals don’t get transmitted to all workstations but only
passes through a few network devices and links.

Subject Time and Completion of the project
The proposed project will require a number of devices and also a network expert in its
implementation. The most crucial part is the budgeting or expenses to be used in the whole
process of implementing the designed network structure. The whole project is expected to
take a maximum of 5 working days that is from 9th Sep 2019 to 13th Sep 2019. The time is not
lengthy due to the type of physical topology used to design the network. In part one, I
indicated the type and number of each network device required to complete the hotels’ Local
Area network. The table below gives rough budgeting of the devices required.
