NewAccess Program: A Vision Document for Addressing Mental Health Issues

This assignment provides a vision document regarding the problems that have lead to the development of the NewAccess program and its capability and benefits. It focuses on addressing mental health issues in Australia.

Introduction:
Mental health issue is one of the severe threats to the health status of a community
and NewAccess is one of the most potential interventions that have been taken in order to
address the issue. Initially the young people aged between 17 to 25 years were the target of
the program. Furthermore, the program has expanded to youth aged 12 years and indigenous
youth. The Program was implemented by Beyondblue. The focus of the program is to provide
easily accessible quality health service for free to the people suffering from depression and
anxiety (beyondblue, 2018). The assignment will focus to provide a vision document
regarding the problems that have lead to the development of the program and capability and
benefits of the program.
Problem:
Like other countries in the worldwide Australian population is also facing mental
health issues to an extent. Health department of Australia has provided effective service for
people with mental illness, still some problems are present that create obstacles in the
treatment of mental illness. One of such problem for people with poor mental health is
visiting different professionals in order to access help to recover from mental illness (Bor et
al., 2014). Most of the people visit a Headspace care worker and general physicians then they
referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist. They have to re-tell about their mental health
condition to each professional before accessing health service. It reduces their potentiality to
explain their condition, thus the professionals face difficulties in understanding the problems
of the patient and in recommending proper treatment (Logan et al., 2017). In order to mitigate
this issue Beyondblue has introduced NewAccess program that provides help of expert
coaches to help the people with mental illness (beyondblue, 2018).
Capabilities:

The aim of the NewAccess program is to provide adequate service to the people with
depression and anxiety. In this regards the program provides overall six sessions including
one assessment session and five subsequent sessions. The program has engaged expert
coaches to help the people with depression and anxiety in an effective manner. In order to
increase the access of the service provided by the NewAccess program Beyondblue has
started to work with various primary health networks (beyondblue, 2018). Such step has
indicated the capability of NewAccess program to make the service easily accessible and
available to individual in the population. The program has the capability to resolve the issue
of mental disorder in an effective manner as it provides effective therapies to individual
according their need. For example, cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the most
important therapies that have been provided to the people with mental illness (Ehde et al.,
2014). Another effective initiative of the program includes the use of generalized anxiety
disorder assessment with seven item anxiety scale (Rayner et al., 2014). Furthermore, to
reach more people and make available service to all, the program has initiated appointment
via phone or online NewAccess website (Clarke, Kuosmanen & Barry, 2015). It has
increased their ability to meet the requirement of the people and achieve expected outcomes.
Benefits:
Revolution in the mental health service of Australia could occur due to the
introduction of NewAccess program as the program could help to address the gap present in
the available mental health service (beyondblue, 2018). The program is beneficial for the
people that fail to access adequate mental health service due to financial problem as the
program provides free session. The issue of visiting different professionals and re-tell them
about mental condition could be resolved through the program as it provides support from
expert coaches that are capable enough to understand the problem of the people with mental
illness and provide adequate treatment for them (Logan et al., 2017). Service like cognitive

behavioural therapy would help to resolve the issue of unintended behaviour and unnecessary
thoughts (Ehde et al., 2014). Generalized anxiety disorder assessment would be beneficial
for identifying problem and introduce effective interventions to recover in an effective
manner (Rayner et al., 2014). Coordination with primary health network would help to make
the service easily accessible to all. Furthermore, it is easy to take part in the program as it
offers appointment through phone or online service (Clarke, Kuosmanen & Barry, 2015).
Thus, it can be said that introduction of NewAccess program and utilizing this new system
would be beneficial for the people with mental disorder in order to access adequate mental
health service, get rid of their mental illness and maintain mental health and well-being in an
effective manner.
