Introduction
Dark tourism is one of the specific kinds of the tourism term which is based on the
promotion and creation of interest of the tourist to visit such places which are connected or
related with the death or the haunted places (Sharpley, 2018). There are certain haunted
places for the tourist to visit (Kreiner, 2016). The dark tourism is one of the niche products of
tourism which is linked with the places where the historical death had befallen. It is one of
the most famous attentions of the tourists (Gmelch & Kaul, 2018).
In the following part, there will be detailed discussion on the two famous destinations
for dark tourism which is most likely to be visited by the tourists. First one is Ground Zero
which is one of the most haunted places in the New York and the other one is The Hiroshima
in Japan that is dubbed as the World War II which bombing that spring to the mind.
Famous Dark tourism Destination
The two famous dark tourism destinations are explained below:
Ground Zero
The Ground Zero in New York is where, the world trade Centre stood prior to the
terrorist attack on 11th September 2001. The World Trade Centre was a huge complex which
involves seven buildings in Lower Manhattan in the city of New York. It was destroyed in
September 11, 2001 (Pieper, Tang & Edwards, 2017). The building was known as the “Twin
Towers” because two of the towers were 110 stories. The site has recently being renovated
with six new multi-storey building and a memorial to the fatalities of the attacks. Formerly,
the name of the building was 9/11 which was renamed as Ground Zero. Ground Zero
basically refers to the epicentre of an atomic bomb explosion (Farrell, 2017).

Hiroshima
The Hiroshima is in Japan and it is often the disastrous World War 2nd which blasting
that coils to the mind of individuals. In the Hiroshima, 80,000 people were killed on 6th
August 1945 as nuclear ‘Little Boy’ was released on the city. More than ten thousand people
were also died as a result of injury and radiation poisoning. Approximately, seventy per cent
of the Hiroshima’s building was destroyed and the city’s confidence was also devastated.
After four years the plans for Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park were drawn up which also
incorporating the iconic Peace Pagoda and the skeletal remains of the A-Bomb Dome
(Atherton, 2017).

(Sagalyn, 2016). The government of Japan has participated in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial

They should attempt to discover an active steadiness between the local community
and private sectors. It also involves the native people in development process to avoid
clashes.

From the above it can be concluded that, the dark tourism industry play a prominent
role in the niche product of tourism. At the time, it has some positive impact on the nation
such as opportunities for business, value of education, create awareness among the visitors,
and also generate the income for the local community which help in improving the economy
of the country. The main two dark tourism spots are discussed above are the Ground Zero and
Hiroshima. It has a created potential impact on the society and on the country such as
spreading awareness, opportunity for the individual to investigate the world and so on but at
the same time certain challenges faced by the dark tourism which may create negative impact
on the future. Therefore, there is needed to be focus on the dark tourism by the government
and local community to cope up from such challenge.
