INTRODUCTION
Essay is basically short piece of the writing which outlines the perspective and
viewpoints of writer. Essay writing is an effective skill which shows how effectively and in a
concise form students and writers are able to present their ideas as well as arguments and to what
extent they present themselves. In short, essay writing forms an integral part of the academic life
and helps the students to increase their overall skills as well as qualities along with experience.
The essay writing primarily help the students to present themselves and express their ideas in
their own way and style.
The main aim of this report is to make the students aware about the key skills which are
required and which are essential for writing an effective essay. The main rationale of carrying
out this discussion is to explain students about the skills which they need to incorporate within
them and help them to make an effective essay. The main purpose of this discussion is to
increase the essay writing skills within students and this report will help them to assess
themselves against these skills.
This report gives an overview of note taking, paraphrasing, summarising and quoting for
essay writing.
MAIN BODY
Note taking is considered as one of the most important skill in essay writing and thus
mainly relates to writing down the notes and summary of specific topic. It is highly essential for
the students to inculcate a skill of note taking in order to improve their essay writing. When
students make notes of what they have read or listen then this eventually helps them to better
understand the topic in-depth and contributes to their learning ability (Silawati (2019, April).
This also helps them to write a through and well-presented essay because when students make
notes of each and every things which they see then this increase their grasp on the keywords and
other complex words. These words and synonyms are very helpful in the essay writing as this
makes the essay more presentable and also reflects the knowledge of writer. Besides this, as
essay is generally recognized by its attractiveness, way of writing as well as incorporating
concise matter in short paragraph. Thus, note making helps the students to become aware of the
essential words and its synonyms and which eventually helps them to present a good and
attractive essay for securing higher grades (Xhama (2018).

Summarizing is the another most important as well as significant skill which is required
for writing an effective essay. Summarizing is basically the ability of students to present the
matter read or learned by them in a concise and short way. Summarizing is not only providing a
short brief of the specific topic or subject but the main important thing is including all the key
points and essential matter of the lengthy topic (Walshe, N. (2016). This forms the integral skill
in essay writing is highly essential for presenting a good essay. The major advantage of
summarizing and extracting the main points from topic or subject is that it helps the students to
recognize each and every detail and helps them by providing an in-depth understanding of the
topic. This same goes for the essay writing. This summarizing skill enable the students to read
the entire matter in short period of time and pick the main ideas for writing an effective essay
which will contain all the ideas of topic. Besides this, summarizing also increases the vocabulary
of students which eventually assist them to write an essay which has no grammar mistake and
contains all the information which describes exactly what the essay will be about
Paraphrasing is primarily expressing the meaning of something written as well as spoken
by using the different words specifically for achieving the greater clarity. Paraphrasing is another
highly remarkable and important skill which is helpful in writing an effective essay.
Paraphrasing is highly common while writing the essay or the research paper (Efendi (2018). It
mainly enables the writer to explain the important ideas and points in their own style and thus
focus upon information which is beneficial and express their ideas. Paraphrasing is highly
important in the academic life as it helps to increase the learning ability of students ad allow
them to express themselves in the most imperative way (Self-Plagiarism or Appropriate Textual
Re-use?, 2019). This paraphrasing also helps in writing the concise and brief essay as when
students will have this skill then they will be able to explain the essay and its essentials in their
won way and will help them to stand out of the crowd. Paraphrasing basically will help the
students to become unique by writing the essay in their own style and using their own words to
describe their emotions about the particular topic. Thus, in this way paraphrasing forms a great
skill which assists students to present their own ideas within essay to make it different from the
other students
Quoting is basically taking exact words and sentence from the original source and then
rephrasing it in the worn way. In short, quoting is presenting the one's own idea in their way and
linking it with some thesis or books (Gholami, and Alinasab (2017). Quoting also plays a great

role in essay writing and is regarded as one of the most remarkable skill which helps to present
the essay in highly effective manner. Quoting in essay helps the students to present their
arguments in a most creative way without violating the essential of essay writing and thus assist
to make a well-through essay. The quoting not only enables the writers to present their ideas but
also increase their overall performance and learning ability (Gibson (2017). Along with this,
quoting also poses a great impression on the reader about that student and implies that the
student have really done a thorough research on the topic of essay and have collected genuine
information about it. When students quote some short sentences in their essay like According to
researchers then this make the essay more presentable and reflects the interest of writer within
that essay (Strong (2019).
CONCLUSION
It has been summarized that essay writing is one of the major aspect within academic lige
and helps the students to enhance their knowledge base. In order to write an effective essay,
students should have some skills as well as qualities. One of the most important skill for writing
efficient essay is note taking. When students are able to make notes of important points then this
increases their grasp on some keywords and synonyms which contributes to effective writing to
high level. Another high remarkable skill is paraphrasing which enables the students to write an
effective essay. This skill enables writers to present their views in the essay and make it unique
from the other ones. The third most important skill is summarizing which shows the ability of
students to incorporate main ideas in a concise way. Summarizing the key points helps to make
essay more presentable as it shows the readers that what essay wants to say and what is the main
conclusion of it. Another highly significant skill which helps to write and effective essay is
quoting. Quoting basically helps the students to present their ideas in their own way and this
eventually makes the essay stand out of the crowd.
