Mary’s case
Therapeutic interpersonal relations are the core components of every healthcare interaction
which enable the enhancement of positive patient-clinician experience. Therapeutic interpersonal
relationships have the capability to enrich and transform the patients’ overall experience. The
Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) carries out functions incepted by the Health
Practitioner Regulation National Law. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia controls
the practices of nursing and midwifery in the country, and one of its primary responsibilities is to
take care of the general public. Registered nurse standards for practice on the other hand,
collaborate with professionals and therapeutic relationships with individuals, as well as with,
groups, communities, and families to enhance general patient outcomes and experiences. The
primary purpose of this essay is to analyze Mary’s case study in relation to these components of
Australian patient care and practices. Evidently, Mary’s practices in this case study are not in
line with the requirements of NMBA and Registered Nurse Standards for Practice and it is
prudent for her colleagues to take a corrective action against her.
Mary is not meeting the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia standards in applying person-
centred and evidence-based care for the delivery of safe and quality care. NMBA requires nurses
to observe a certain prescribed code of conduct when handling the patients (Scanlon, Cashin,
Bryce, Kelly, & Buckely, 2016). Health care practitioners are required to put into consideration
various professional and legal requirements during their routine operations in healthcare centers.
NMBA standards describe the ideologies of professional behavior which lead to safe practices,
and evidently shape the behaviors nurses are expected to exhibit not just by their coworkers but

also the community at large. Individual nurses have their own personal beliefs and values.
Nevertheless, the NMBA outlines certain principles that every nurse in Australia is supposed to
implement in their practices. It also provides nursing learners with an appreciation of the
behaviors and conduct expected in their career. Every nurse has professional responsibilities to
comprehend and follow. In fact, a nurse also has an obligation to make the interests of his/her
patient their first concern, and to practice safety and effectiveness (Craigie, et al, 2016).
Mary is not putting into consideration any requirements set forth by the NMBA. During her
shifts, patients appear neglected and uncared for. Besides, she is leaving the patients’
surroundings unkempt and in extremely bad conditions. In overall, he conducts and behaviors are
totally against the domains, values, and principles of NMBA. Standards set by this board require
Mary to practice collaboratively, effectively, and safely. Person-centred practice call for safety
and evidence-based practices for the wellbeing and healthiness of all people (Santos, & Cutcliffe,
(Eds.). (2018). It requires nurses to work in partnership with the person under medication,
advocate for shared decision-making and healthcare delivery between the patient, health experts,
friends, families, and nominated partners. Mary deliberately leaves the patients unattended and
presumably attends to her private personal affairs at their expense.
Mary has not formed a therapeutic, person-centred relationships with her clients allocated to her
care. She leaves them uncared for and in a pathetic environment where bed sheets are wet and
urine bottles have not been emptied. Could she have formed a therapeutic, person-centred
relationship with the patients, Mary could have portrayed a close and consistent association with
them. Instead she leaves them unattended and goes to the nurses’ station. Initiating therapeutic
relationships with her clients would help change their lives for the better. Such relationships are
