Introduction: Recently New Yorkers have started facing homelessness in a rapid number. The record says that one in every 125
New Yorker is homeless which accounts nearly 70K men, women and children. Almost 4000 people sleep in the streets of New York,
public spaces and subway system. The main reason for rapid increase of homeless people is minimal wages and skyrocketing rents
that are putting pressure over household with inadequate resources (Woodside/Sunnyside Neighborhood Profile, 2020). Recent data
have shown that almost 20% of New York city resident comes under below poverty line that means they earn less than $24300 for a
family that includes 4 members. This this assignment, Woodside Queens, New York is chosen as an area for study. This paper
discusses about the town, area analysis and assessment done on the received data.
General description of the town (including the location/contextual information): Woodside, New York is a
commercial and residential area in the western part of the borough of Queens, NY. It is surrounded by Maspeth in the south, Astoria in
the north, Sunnyside in the west and Jackson height, Elmhurst and east Elmhurst in the east. They have a mixed population as the area
which is near Roosevelt is highly busy and the there are some areas that are quiet. The area is home for Irish population along with

German and Italian immigrants. Recently Latinos as well as south Asians have started settling in Woodside. Therefore, it is considered
as a melting pot for all cultures and a hub for diverse drinks and eats. Variation in languages were noticed and the international
population dominates the streetscape.
Unlike other boroughs in NYC, Woodland, Queens have preserved its identity for many years regardless of some perpetual changes
(Planning, 2020). The streets of Woodland put light in the concept of small town in a big city mindset accurately. Recently there have
been increased in the number of homeless people in that area and residents have started complaining about the homeless sleeping in
the sidewalk area. People of that area have started showing concern about the quality of life issue such as drinking alcohol in the
streets and going to bathroom on the streets.
Brief history of the town, including implications for public health: Woodside, Queens was formerly resided
by native Americans. It was populated for over 10,000 years and hence counted as the oldest societies in Queens. In 1867, Benjamin
Hitchcock the developer bought a 115-acre farm, and then he split it is into lots and sold then by 1869 and hence the Woodside village
was created. The land of Woodside is fertile and wet hence native American inhabitant call this place as the place of bad waters and
European settlers call the place as flats, muddy, marshes and bogs (Woodside/Sunnyside Neighborhood Profile, 2020). Woodside was
mainly settles by farmers in the 18th century. Inhabitants developed techniques to farm in the land profitably.
The resident of this place are mainly smokers that’s add to the increase in air pollutant and several lung and heart disorders.
About 14% population are smokers, 9% diabetic and 23% have high blood pressure. There are health clinics in the town however it is
not always affordable by every income group and homeless people in the town (Stott, 2019).
